Everyone has heard of MySpace, right? Plenty of people talk about it, but few seem willing to admit they have a page on the 4 year-old social networking site. Two years ago, the New York Times said MySpace had, “the personality of an online version of a teenager’s bedroom, a place where the walls are papered with posters and photographs, the music is loud, and grownups are an alien species.”
Hm, well I guess you can’t really judge a website by its layout. Now more than half of MySpace users are 35 years old or over. According to comScore Media Metrix, which specializes in digital media measurement, the age group is the fastest growing segment among total users.
By the time international media mammoth Rupert Murdoch (think Fox News, Fox Network, Twentieth Century Fox, etc., etc.) purchased MySpace in spring of 2006, there were at least 70 million users, with tens, no, hundreds of thousands of new profiles being created every day. The international user base for MySpace is also expanding. A profile search this afternoon pulled up over 209 million profiles… It is quite a scene.
My best guess about the mass appeal of MySpace (in case you’re curious) is the ease with which it combines interpersonal communication, information and media saturation at every micro and macro level imaginable, and voyeurism. Who wouldn’t want that all at the same time—in bright, flashing colors and adorned with glitter text? Of course, I could be over-thinking things.
Maybe MySpace is just the most relevant fad at the moment. Maybe it’s the bandwagon effect. Maybe people sign up because everyone they know is doing it too…
And if that’s the case, then you might like to create an account today with MySpace if you don’t already have one and add Real Adventures as a friend. (C’mon, you knew where this was heading!) It’s an easy way to keep up with all the neat new things going on at Real Adventures, and perhaps take in a healthy dose of voyeurism while you’re at it.
