Nestled deep in the Swiss Alps, Murren has a mountain view to die for. Cars are strictly prohibited within the town, allowing its inhabitants to preserve the quaint, village atmosphere. If you’re looking for Switzerland vacations Murren could be perfect. Here is a travel guide that will allow you to get to this hidden gem and enjoy its many treasures:
Getting There
Murren and the other tiny Swiss cities at higher elevations are notoriously hard to get to. If you’re taking a jet charter or major airline into Switzerland, fly into Friedrichshafen, Berne, or Geneva airport and catch a train to Interlaken. Then, from Interlaken you can get to Lauterbrunnen. From Lauterbrunnen you can take the Bergbahn railway directly to Murren.
Things to Do
- Check out the Schilthorn, where you can gaze upon snow-topped mountains plunging into ragged black rocks. The view is stunning and powerful.
- Hiking is definitely the preferred past time within Murren. Ask your concierge which trails they recommend for your endurance and skill level. There are plenty of paths that go all the way to Gimmelwald. If you’re not a fan of hiking uphill, simply take the cable car back up to Murren. The trails of this mountain town are notoriously clean, well marked, and convenient, providing rest stops and places to purchase food along the way.
- If you like to ski, Switzerland is the place to do it. Murren’s ski season lasts from about December to Easter.
- Try to plan a hike to Trummelbach falls, where you can see cascading waterfalls that fly out of the Alps from a tiny gorge.
If you are visiting France or Northern Italy, the Alps are just a train-ride away. Murren, Switzerland will blow you away with breathtaking views, wonderful trails, and a friendly atmosphere.
