We are often asked where the best places for solo travelers are, and we tell them, “Anywhere!”. It really depends on a number of factors including the weather, culture, food, attractions and activities you are interested in. However, we can give you a good head start by telling you some of our well-loved destinations (in no particular order):
Costa Rica
Costa Rica is one of the underrated destinations in Central America, and we find this even sometimes better than Mexico, especially in terms of safety. Of course, the fine beaches are found in the latter, but Costa Rica offers a lot more. You can go water rafting in the Reventazon, climb its steep mountains, or be amazed by the geysers. There are also plenty of very affordable accommodation options to choose from. If you are looking for a full-blown adventure, this is the place to be.
Some travelers may think that New Zealand is a boring destination. It may not be Australia, which is more vibrant, but it’s a gem all by itself. It is incredibly peaceful and definitely a safe place to travel. People here are friendly, and activities can be wide ranging. You can enjoy water rafting in the black waters of Waitomo Caves, check out the hot springs in Touropia, or surf in Piha. You can ride a hot air balloon, bungee jump, zorb, or meet the Maori and learn more about their culture. Best of all, there are over 300 hostels all across the country.
Singapore
Singapore is a very tiny country, and yet it has risen to one of the richest and most industrialized. So if you’re looking for shopping and entertainment without the hefty price tag found in the Middle East or Europe, it’s best to travel here. It’s also a very safe country and extremely clean. There are a lot of quaint and affordable inns and hostels, and transportation is top notch. It’s also a melting pot of culture, as influences of Indian, Malay, and Chinese are highly evident in their food and architecture.
Philippines
The Philippines may not have the best infrastructure or mode of transport and it’s also not the safest or cleanest country to visit, but for the last two years it has seen a great increase in tourism as more natural attractions become known to the rest of the world such as the many small hills in Bohol, the subterranean river in Palawan, and the surfing beaches of Pangasinan in the north and Siargao in the south. It’s got countless beautiful churches, lots of great food, and ultra friendly and helpful people who don’t mind helping out solo travelers like yourself.
Switzerland
If you want to be left alone on your travels, then Switzerland is a great place to visit. People here are accommodating, but they also know when to give you some space. There are a lot of choices when it comes to transport, and you can even tour some of its busy areas on a bike. If you want a more intriguing night life, you can go to Zurich, but if you prefer something more quiet, you can head to the countryside a few hours away in Verbier.
