Road trips are the classic form of American vacationing. Road trips have been increasingly easy, as the development of vacationing vehicles has grown considerably over the years. It’s not unbelievably comfortable to make a long-distance trip across the country with minimum effort and discomfort. If you and your family haven’t taken a long road trip together, consider these reasons why you should take one this summer.

1. Family Time

While vacations can lead to a hurry-up-and-get-there mentality, road trips are all about the journey. There are plenty of sights to visit on the way to the destination and it’s important that stops to enjoy them are frequent. You and your family can have a lot of fun and, with no other options, you don’t have to worry about your kids (especially if they’re teens) wanting to run off and do their own thing.

2. Flexibility

Unlike with most trips, where you have to leave and arrive at an exact time, road trips are flexible. You have the freedom to leave early or stay an extra day. Plus, when you arrive at your destination, you won’t have to worry about renting a car or using public transportation.

3. Detours

Although getting lost along the way might be annoying and add time to your trip, sometimes they lead to the greatest discoveries and memories. Whether you decide to take a detour because you see something interesting that you want to discover or you end up detouring because of mistakes in navigation, since road trips are often about the journey, you can enjoy this adventure as it comes.

4. Costs

Depending on where you go and what you do, driving there could potentially save you a lot of money — especially if you have a large family. Those plane tickets add up fast! You’ll especially save if you look for a vacationing spot near your home town. Sometimes it’s not about where you go; it’s about who you’re with.

5. Comfort

Road trips are more comfortable than ever before. Where your parents probably took road trips in a hot station wagon with not much to do, there are more options today with RVs, motorhomes, and conversion vans. Conversion vans, such as those available from Dave Arbogast Vans, have luxury amenities added, including luxury seating, USB plugs (perfect for portable gaming systems), DVD systems, and more. Often, the backseat can convert into a bed as well — perfect if you’re planning on camping.

6. Stop to Enjoy the Scenery

Unlike airplanes, when you see something cool or beautiful you can stop and take a look. Whether it’s a waterfall through a mountain pass, an intriguing forest, or a mystical cave, road trips give you the chance to explore and see something you would have never seen from the sky.

So whether the trip is planned or unexpected, consider hopping in the car this summer and feeling the air rushing past as you head off on an adventure.
