Rooms/Suites

WILLIAM MORRIS SUITE
The charm of yesteryear is evoked as you enter this large, gracious room with queen size bed and antique furniture, including a magnificent chaise longue, kauri scotch chest and antique oval mirror. A grand kauri fireplace commands attention as does the genuine 'turn of the century' light fitting, original wallpaper and matching frieze. The room is spacious and airy, attracting all day sun through large windows and double doors. The doors open out on to a private verandah, courtyard and garden, and offer an alternative entrance to your room. A large private bathroom completes the suite. It has both bath and shower and is tastefully furnished in keeping with the theme of the homestead.
DORMER SUITE
Nestled under the dormer roof, up a short flight of stairs, is a charmingly romantic suite of rooms ideal for a honeymoon couple seeking quietness, privacy and seclusion. The highlight of the room is the magnificent white queen size bed, prettily draped in white muslin and bedecked with cushions and pillows.A balcony overlooks the courtyard and attractive garden and the eye is drawn over the trees to the majestic mountains in the distance. The large adjoining ensuite is light and spacious with tiled walls, and incorporates a spa/bath, shower and a delightful little picture window depicting the Pepper Tree design, after which the villa was named.
SUNSET SUITE
Aptly named for its aspect that allows you to enjoy the sun setting in the west, this pretty room has French doors leading to a private garden. Here, the songs of bellbirds, fantails and other New Zealand native birds greet you in the morning. Climbing roses, pretty hedges, shrubs and blossom trees surround this sanctuary where you may choose to take breakfast alfresco. The garden allows private access to your suite. An attractive ensuite adjoins the Sunset room, providing a shower and special nonslip tiles under foot.
BELL SUITE
If a romantic interlude is on your mind or you need a delightful place to relax and unwind, then curl up in front of the welcoming log fire and enjoy the privacy and peace on offer in the Bell Suite. Cosy and intimate are the words to describe this delightful chamber from which you step down into a private ensuite complete with shower and non-slip tiles. There are twin or king size bed options and attractive New Zealand prints adorn the walls.
HALL SUITE
The generous proportions of this room reflect the warmth and glow of the morning sun spilling through the windows as you relax in your twin bed. The vista from the large, graciously curtained, windows is framed by the wisteria-clad verandah. A magnificent ornate wooden fireplace, featuring antique tile surrounds, draws the eye as an imposing focus in the room as does the old fashioned solid wood stand-alone wardrobe complete with full length mirror. Across the hall the attractive private bathroom offers full wheelchair access and facilities for the disabled.

"Robert Bell was the first occupant of the spacious wooden home, once known as the Riverlands Run Homestead. He was one of four sons of early settler William Bell who, with his family, came to Wakapuaka in 1867 and took up the lease of Hillwood Farm. By the early 1870s William had enough behind him to buy the Erina run in the Wairau Valley. Later he sold Erina and bought the Benhopai Run in the Waihopai Valley and shortly afterward the 5600-acre farm known as Riverlands Run. In those days the farm extended as far south as the Ugbrooke Run in the Awatere.

William Bell died in 1895 and his estate was run in partnership by sons Adam and Robert. In 1905 it was recorded in the Cyclopaedia of New Zealand that Riverlands Run was grazing 4000 sheep with about 650 acres in crops. Robert Bell lived there until 1910 after which Adam Bell and his wife Hazeldene (nee Clouston) made in their home. The Bells in 1919 sold to Christopher Smith and in 1928 he sold to Robert Forsyth of Springbank, near Rangiora, in a deal that involved the Smith taking over the Forsyths' farm and retaining a portion of Riverlands.
