Tamarillo Tropical Expeditions guides small groups on sea-kayaking journeys and study programs in the remote Kadavu Islands of Fiji.Tamarillo groups stay in small, simple resorts and traditional Fijian villages. The days are spent sea-kayaking, snorkeling and trekking through the spectacular wilderness of Kadavu - an environment combining tropical rainforests, palm-fringed beaches, small islands and blue lagoons, all sheltered by the Great Astrolabe Reef, one of the world's largest coral reefs. No experience is needed - you just need to be in good health and be ready for an adventure.

Typical Daykeyboard_double_arrow_up
The distances we paddle each day are not huge, (around 3-4 hours), with optional side-trips available for those feeling more energetic. The snorkeling and scuba-diving along the Great Astrolabe Reef is world-class, and is a highly recommended activity. Snorkeling equipment and instruction is included in the Tamarillo expedition price. There are resorts along the way with certified scuba operations for those who want to dive. Our motorised support boat is there to carry luggage and supplies, and is always available to help out weary kayakers. You paddle as much or as little as you choose. Then there's lying in hammocks, reading books, going fishing, swimming, beachcombing, meeting the locals, walking through the rain-forest, bird-watching, playing beach volleyball, coconut petanque, watching the sun set, playing guitars, gazing at stars.... You'll love it!

Age range, type of groupkeyboard_double_arrow_up
Tamarillo expeditions are for all ages. Our youngest guests have been 3 yr-olds, and we've had a few in their 70's as well. (Kids are welcome on our family expeditions.) We run Classic trips for those seeking a little adventure, and Extreme trips for those seeking a lot. We run Study Programs for academic groups, and Design Your Own Programmes for everyone. Our trips are very safe. The Great Astrolabe Reef encircles the islands of Kadavu, meaning the water we paddle is always calm. The kayaks we use are sleek and very stable, and all are equipped with the usual safety features. The Tamarillo guides have kayaked, worked and adventured in wild places for many years, and are skilled in risk-management and emergency medical care. Fiji does have destructive cyclones occasionally, but only in the summer season. Tamarillo Tropical Expeditions occur outside the cyclone season when the weather is more settled, fine and warm. We keep our groups small to minimise our impact on the places we pass through, and to maximise our enjoyment of each day.

Sleeping and mealskeyboard_double_arrow_up
No camping is required. We stay in small, simple resorts, all within comfortable paddling range of each other, and as guests of a local village. The chief and the people there have extended a welcome to Tamarillo groups, and enjoy sharing their culture and lifestyle with us. Each night on the journey we sleep in 'bure's, traditional Fijian houses, hand-made by the local builders and weavers. Comfortable beds, clean sheets, and fresh showers ensure you will rest well. Hearty, wholesome meals will satisfy the adventurers appetite.
