Description

The Carolina Inn combines the graciousness and sophistication of a historic, southern inn with the intimacy and privacy of a secluded retreat . With 184 luxuriously appointed guestrooms and suites, over 13,000 square feet of unique, historic meeting and event space, southern colonial architecture, exquisite landscaping, and superb culinary service, this award-winning inn is the perfect choice for the discriminating business and leisure . Built in 1924 by John Sprunt Hill-distinguished alumnus, successful businessman and University trustee-the inn's original concept was "to provide for the special wants and comforts of the University alumni and University visitors" . In 1935, Hill donated the Inn to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with the stipulation that after meeting expenses, profits from the Inn were to be used for "the maintenance and support of the University library, and especially for the support of the collection of books and papers known as the North Carolina Collection" . Mr . Hill's wishes are still carried out today as the Inn returns its profits to the University to support the University library . A bronze plaque commemorating Mr . Hill's donation is located at the front desk of the Inn and quite simply states "This generous gift affords a cheerful Inn for visitors, a town hall for the state, and a home for returning sons and daughters of alma mater" Architect Arthur C . Nash of New York conceived the "southern colonial style" used in the original design of the Inn . The most striking elements are the two-story portico facing Cameron Avenue, and the glazed cupola that crowns the building; both were copied from G eorge Washington's home in Mount Vernon, Virginia . Today, The Carolina Inn more resembles a huge residential estate than a commercial property . The architectural design, intimate courtyards and lush landscaping all serve to give guests a sense of serenity and privacy . The rich color scheme, antiques and plush furniture call forth images of a lavish private residence .
