Located in the Allentown neighborhood of Pittsburgh, above the South Side, between Mt. Oliver and Mt. Washington. A 5 minute drive (30 min walk) to downtown Pittsburgh, The Historic Southside, and inclines, famous for their views of the city's skyline. On the busline of Oakland,and the Strip District. Beautiful, Clean, Modern renovated bank building, including a full service kitchen, commons area, with a library, games, piano, TV and VCR, conference room, and dining room area. Pay phone, and Pittsburgh visitor information, very helpful, knowledgeable staff.Lockers available both inside the dorm rooms, and in our front vestibule for use while we are closed during the day. Our facilities are handicapped accessible.
We have both dormitory style rooms, which consist of bunk beds and a shared bathroom, and private/family rooms. There are room dividers in the dorms which create some privacy. The showers are hot, and the beds comfortable. We also have a limited number of private rooms. One type sleeps up to four, it has one double bed, and a set of bunk beds as well as a dresser, and a window, with a semi-private bath across the hall. Our other private room sleeps one to two, and has bunk beds, a chair, and a window with a semi private bath across the hall.
We have a conference room, a kitchen, a library, a piano, free visitor information, a pay phone, laundry facilities on-site, soda machine in our dining area, and a travel center where we sell guide books, Eurail passes, ISIC cards, and Hostelling International memberships. We do have free parking, and bike storage.
There are restaurants, ATMs, grocery store, and a 24-hour convenience store within walking distance.
We have a message board, where phone calls are posted, and we can accept mail for guests.
No pets, no smoking, and no alcohol permitting in the building. You must be 18 to check in, however those under 18 can stay with an over 18 chaperone, call for details. the dorms are separated by gender.
The rates for dorm beds are $19/night for members, $22 per night for non members. The 2 bed private room for one person is $24/night for members, $27/night for non members. For two people $43/night for members, and $49/night for non members. The family rooms (sleep up to four) are a MINIMUM of $44/night. Please call for other price quotes specific to your needs. Linens are inlcuded in the private room rates. Open everyday except December 23-26.
During your stay here, you may run into people from countries you've never even heard of, you might catch a potluck dinner happening in our dining area, a movie out of our extensive collection, or grab an ideaof where to go out for the evening from our knowledgeable staff, fun for all!
Driving:Exit I-376 at Grant Street, left on Blvd of the Allies, left on Smithfield Street, cross bridge, left on Carson St., get in right lane, right at first light(Arlington Avenue, hostel at top of hill, 2 miles from downtown on corner of Warrington.
Public Transportation:from AIRPORT: take 28X bus to Wood Street "T" subway station. Walk down Wood St and look for a bus stop sign on the left side of the road for a 51A or 46K bus. From Greyhound/Amtrak: walk down Liberty Ave to Smithfield St. Walk down Smithfield to Fifth Ave in front of McDonalds. Wait here to catch the 51A or 46K buses.
Members recieve reduced rate, and can get dicounts at local businesses with their HI card.
