Several Western Colorado Bed & Breakfast Inns are offering self-guided packages for individual road cyclists to explore the back roads in Western Colorado. Savor the views of the San Juan, Grand Mesa, and West Elk Mountains while cycling in the farmlands, orchards, and mesas in the Uncompahgre and North Fork Valleys. Be pampered overnight at select inns, including a country farmhouse, traditional historic, 100 year old log cabin, and adobe hacienda. Available anytime, space permitting.
Routes are on paved roads and avoid highways except for short stretches where sides are typically available. One two night package includes two 30 mile days over gently rolling countryside with a few short hills past fields, sheep, fruit farms, and a winery with views of the 10,000 foot Grand Mesa and the majestic San Juans. Another option includes approx. 30 to 50 mile days with winding hills up and over the mesas interspersed with rolling countryside. This option opens up vistas of the West Elk Mountains to the east and the San Juan Mountains to the south, and can include a ride past an elk farm on a hardpacked dirt road. Longer trips, including day trips from individual inns, can be arranged for more advanced bicyclists or those wishing more days.
Packages are geared towards adults and older children. Participants are generally couples or small groups looking for an opportunitity to ride at their own speed and skill level, without working within the confines of a larger group.
