Description of Surrounding Area

Located in north-central West Virginia, Shinnston is within 60 miles or less of 8 rail trails (1 is less than 50 feet from the house), 9 of the remaining 17 covered bridges in West Virginia, antique shops, 8 State Parks, golf courses, miniature golf, birding, genealogical libraries, and 2 overnight stabling facilities that meet the standards of East Coast/Kentucky horse farms are near the B & B. We offer off-street cement pad parking for motorcycles and offer routings for sport rides - ride all day and do not cross the same piece of pavement twice. Description of Accommodations

Located 1 block from US Rt 19 in downtown Shinnston, the Gillum House is as quiet as in the country. The 2-story house was built in 1912 and features the original woodwork throughout the house. The Gillum Room has a private, ensuite bathroom complete with the original claw-foot tub and a 48 inch shower. The Harrisand Rosi's Rooms share a bathroom that features a 60 inch shower. The large dining room has over 100 varieties of tea featured at the tea hutch and at least 12 varieties of coffe on the coffee sideboard. Located on a corner lot, the side yard or the glider on the large front porch offer a place to relax. The Library offers wing-backed chairs for chats, reading, or playing chess or backgammon.

Description of Rooms/Suites

The bookcase in the second floor hall and the book rack in the Harris Room hold books for your reading pleasure - go ahead and indulge yourself because your selection(s) go home with you compliments of the Gillum House (please do not send them back). PLEASE steal the books!
The Gillum Room features a 4-poster queen bed with pillow-top mattress and down-filled comforter. The engine and tender on the shelf above the mantle of the now decorative fireplace pays tribute to Mr. Troy Gillum, B&O Staion Agent from 1911 to 1957. This room has a TV and VCR, original artwork on the walls, antique furniture and oil lamps, and several dolls from the collection in the house. The private bath has both a claw-foot tub and a 48 inch shower. This is also the "honeymoon suite" as we have had several honeymoons here.
Rosi's Room is named for Mrs. Harris' grandaughter who wrote her loves on the walls and thus claimed this room as "hers" forever. This Windsor-style double bed has a pillow-top mattress and down-filled comforter. Relax in the rocking chair and admire the original artwork, handmade baskets, antique oil lamps on the mantle and dresser, and the cozy warmth of this room.
The Harris Room reflects the personality of the Harris family who purchased the house from the Gillums (Panek family purchased in 1994) and features an antique handmade quilt on the double bed with pillow-top mattress. Relax in the rocking chair in the reading nook with antique floor lamp and enjoy the original artwork, handmade baskets, and antique oil lamps on the mantle of the now decorative fireplace.
Rosi's Room and the Harris share a bathroom that features a 60 inch shower.

Amenities

All rooms come equipped with terry robes in the closets for our guests to use. There is a dedicated phone line in the Library for internet access and telephones are available in Library, Harris Room, and kitchen (or use the cordless). There is a TV with DVD/VCR in the Gillum Room and a TV/VCR is in the Harris.
All rooms have a CD/radio/alarm clock unit.
Jimmy's Diner is the restaurant version of "Cheers" or choose the Peking Chinese. Stroll over to the Pizza Express for calzones or pizzza or salad - or order in. Visit the Bice-Ferguson Memorial Museum and during tghe season, cap the weekend with a night at the Sunset Drive-in for a double feature.. Shinnston is the hub of North-central West Virginia.

Services Offered

A full breakfast (low fat/low cholesterol - special diet needs accommodated) is served at the time requested by the guest.
Massage is available by appointment (available at the B&B or at the studio). Bicycle are available. Suggested donation to the Lord's Pantry Food Bank for use of bikes. Overnight stabling for your horses is 2.5 miles from the Gillum House (separate fee).

Restrictions

The Gillum House is a smoke-free facility but a lovely ashtray is found on the front porch for our smoking guests. Due to host allergies, pets are not accepted. Children, however, ARE welcome.

Directions

From I-79: Exit #124 (Jerry Dove Drive) - turn west WV Rt where you turn right and then at the stop sign turn left onto WV Rt. 131 approx. 6 miles to Shinnston. Turn right at the traffic light, go 2 blocks and turn left on Walnut St (if you get to the second light turn left and then left again and you are there when you see the flag). The Gillum House is the first house on the left. Park under the US flag.
