Description of Activity/Tour

Have you ever spent an hour under the sea exploring a coral reef? Felt the freedom of life aboard a sailing yacht? Met the morning with a plunge overboard? Get ready for an incredible experience because this is only a taste of the adventure.

Our most popular program blends scuba and sail training with island exploration and adventure. Imagine cruising aboard a 50-foot yacht, island hopping across the Caribbean's French and Dutch West Indies with a crew of 12 teens your age. Discover the magic of scuba on coral reefs teeming with life. Throw in the Bob Marley CD, hoist the anchor and take the helm as you learn to sail on crystal blue waters. Hike across a volcanic crater and into a mountain rainforest. Enjoy an afternoon relaxing on a perfect white sand beach or challenge your crewmates to a friendly game of beach volleyball. Hop into your ski boat and try wakeboarding or tubing. Best of all, no experience is necessary, just a desire to try new things and work hard in a team. Get set for an amazing summer!

Every day is packed with fun and mastering new skills both above and below the waterline. You are the skipper, navigator and crew as we work together to get from place to place. Plot the course, raise the sails and grind the winches. Helm to lee, jib ho, ready about… The gentle summer tradewinds and close proximity of the islands make for ideal sail training grounds. There are opportunities to master small boat handling and race lasers to perfect your sailing skills. Earn your US Sailing and/or American Sailing Association Keelboat certificate as you explore. Although the islands are close together, each stop is totally unique. Some are French, some British and some Dutch, and each has a different look and feel.

Most participants have never taken a breath on scuba. A little apprehensive about your first dive? Don't worry, diving is a blast. Learn one step at a time, at your own pace. From your first exhilarating breath underwater, discover a spectacular world you never imagined. Dive the Caribbean's best marine parks, explore mysterious shipwrecks and see an abundance of fish and creatures in every shape and color. We even dive at night when the reefs' colors explode and new inhabitants emerge. Our small groups and flexible course design allow you to earn not only your PADI Open Water certification, but also your Advanced Open Water certification on 17 dives.

Our yachts are comfortable and perfect for cruising and adventure. At each destination, we settle in at calm, hidden coves and protected anchorages. These beautiful, volcanic islands provide endless opportunities for exploration and discovery. Hike through the lush Elfin Rainforest 3000 feet above sea level in Saba. Dance in a Carnival parade. Catch air on a morning wakeboard session. Enjoy simple Caribbean culture and take an afternoon or two for community service. There is always time to relax and enjoy postcard perfect sunsets while recounting funny stories from the day. Life aboard is an adventure all in itself where camaraderie, challenge and shared experiences bond friendships for life.

Typical Day

There are no "typical" days on Broadreach! But we'll always start the day early so we can have a full day of adventure. Maybe we'll begin with a wreck dive and then set sail for the next island. We might do a rainforest hike in the afternoon or an early evening water-ski. There's a lot to do and our days are flexible. If you and your mates want to dive more than hike, or do a late full-moon night dive, no problem. This is your adventure!

Age range, type of group

Broadreach keeps the programs small with just ten to fourteen participants - the perfect size to create an ideal atmosphere that is supportive and non-competitive where every person is an integral part of the group. On most programs they combine two grades and try to keep everyone about the same age. For example, one program might be for participants who are just completing the 9th and 10th grades and another might be for participants who are just completing the 11th and 12th grades.

Sleeping and meals

You'll sleep under the stars! There are four to five cabins on the yacht, but everyone prefers to sleep out on deck each night to enjoy the cool tradewinds under brilliant Caribbean skies. There's lots of deck space on a catamaran and plenty of room up top for everyone.

You and your mates share the cooking duties. A general menu is set before the trip, but each cooking crew adds their flair to the meals. Breakfast and lunch are usually simple with cereal and sandwiches and an occasional hot meal. Dinner is bigger and always hot with menus ranging from veggie stir-fry to pasta to Mexican night. The boat is loaded with dried goods before the trip and you'll stock up on fresh fruits, vegetables and breads along the voyage.

Restrictions

Participants must be teenagers ages 13-19 who are looking to do something different with their summer!

Programs are 17-21 days long. Trip cost ranges between $3580-$4480, depending on the session.
