Active Adventure

Activities: 3 1/2 days canoeing, 1 day hiking, 1/2 day horseback

Route: Easy to Moderately Easy.

Start/Finish: St. James, MO

Typical Day

Day 1 - St. James: The Painted Lady awaits! This St.James, MO, Victorian B&B is our hot tubing, dining, and resting place after we tour some of the regions many wineries.

Days 2 thru 4 - Eminence: At Akers Ferry, we descend downstream. We float by Cave Spring, picnic at Rock House Cave, and take a wildflower hike to the magnificent spring in Pulltite Canyon. The rustic atmosphere of Cedar Stone Lodge B&B brings a comfortable close to our day.
Photo #3 - Ozark National Scenic Rivers - central missouri hiking & trekking The Jacks Fork branch of the Current carries us today. A side-creek hike reveals pink granite canyon walls rising from crystal clear pools. After our river-side picnic, we hike to the massive Marvel Cave. Spring peepers and a local musician serenade us as we dine under the stars.
Hike through granite shut-ins and historic old water-mills on the Ozark Trail. We lunch at Rocky Falls where crystal waters invite us to swim. Verdant views greet us as we hike to the summit of Stegal Mountain.

Days 5 thru 6 - Montauk State Park: Mount your horse at River Ranch for a secluded Ozarks tour. Chances are we will see the magnificent herd of wild horses that inhabits Pioneer Forest. Trade saddles for paddles after lunch. Stay overnight in the riverside cabins of Steelman Lodge in Montauk State Park.
The Upper Current River, "Jewel of the Ozarks", propels our canoes down its intimate columbine-draped waterway today. Partake a riverside lunch at Medlock Cave and stop at Welch Spring to explore the ruins of a 1920s era health spa. Our journey concludes with our return to St. James.
