Gwin's Lodge, about 100 miles south of Anchorage, is located in Cooper Landing, Alaska along the emerald-green waters of the Upper Kenai River. To reach Gwin's Lodge, depart Anchorage south on the Seward Highway (Alaska Route 1), rated one of America's ten most scenic highways. The breathtaking drive follws the shoeline of Turnagain Arm. Watch the mountain sides for dall sheep, eagles, bears, and mountain goats. Watch the arm, especially during the salmon migration season, for Beluga Whales -- they are white, up to 35 feet long and commonly feed on Salmon.
Pass the settlement of Portage at the east end of the arm before the highway makes a u-turn and heads back west on the other end of the Turnagain Arm. Within a few miles the highway will turn south as you climb through majestic Turnagain Pass. Continue south on the Seward Highway until you come to the junction of Alaska Routes 1 and 9. Remain on Alaska Route 1 but note that the name of Alaska Route 1 changes from the Seward Highway to the Sterling Highway. Once on the Sterling Highway, continue west for approximately 14 miles, past the town of Cooper Landing, to Milepost 52 and historic Gwin's Lodge and the world famous Russian River.
