Surrounding Area

The Gables is located in a residential area near the University of Pennsylvania. It is located on the trolley line and only 12 minutes from center city Philadelphia and about 15 minutes from the historic area and museums. There is off street parking available on the premises.

This beautiful 10 bedroom home has been restored over the last 8 years and has won awards for historic preservation and also for hospitality. Philadelphia Magazine has awarded it "Best of Philly: Best urban get-away" The Gables has also been featured in the December 2002 issue of Victorian Homes Magazine. It is truly one of the first and one of the finest bed and breakfasts in Philadelphia.

Besides the antiques, each room is complete with private phones, cable television, fine linens and plush towels. A full breakfast is served each morning in the formal dining room. Many guests enjoy the magnificent wrap-around porch that surrounds nearly half the house. In addition to innkeeping, the owners also enjoy gardening and share their pleasures with the guests.

Accommodations

The Gables is a three story red brick Queen Anne style Victorian mansion with magnificent wrap-around porch. The front entrance and foyer has chestnut woodwork and wainscoat throughout while the parlors all are trimmed in cherry. Each room has special intricate in-lay floors and oriental style carpets. The owners have been collecting antiques for years. You'll find very few reproduction pieces, except where necessity dictates.

Rooms/Suites

Of the ten bedrooms, eight have their own private baths, two share a hall bath. The Gables offers a selection of beds from twin, full, and queen size. Sorry no king size. The rooms either have armoires or closets a comfortable sofa or chair and table. All rooms are decorated in Victorian antique furniture. The owners have purchased fine linens for the beds with embroidered or lace pillowcases, down comforters in most rooms,and plush Egyptian cotton towels.

Amenities

Each room has its own private phone line with answer machine and hook up available for the internet, cable televsion and alarm clocks, air conditioning and individual room heat. High speed wireless internet connection is also offered. The master suite has a small glassed in sun porch and two of the other rooms have working fireplaces.

Policies & Restrictions

The Gables has a resident small dogs, a miniature poodle, "Tobe". He wins the hearts of the guests on their arrival. For those concerned with allergies, poodles do not shed so they are not a problem. One of the owners has respitory problems and is the reason a poodle has been chosen. There is no smoking at the Gables except outside on the porch or in the garden. We regret that The Gables in not handicapped accessible.

Rates & Availability

The rooms which share the hall bath rent for $75 single, $85 double occupancy.

The private baths with full sized beds are $95 single and $110 double.

The private baths with queen sized beds are $110 and $125. The deluxe queens are $120 single and $135 double occupancy.

Directions

The Gables is 10-15 minutes from the airport. It is a $20 taxi ride or $9 per person by Lady Liberty Shuttle Service which brings you right to the door.

From the train station it is 5-10 minutes by taxi or by subway. You must catch the SEPTA Subway Surface Car Green line #13 trolley heading westbound and get off at the corner of 46th and Chester Avenue.

By Car, take Route 76 and exit at #342A, South Street, Go through the University of Pennsylvania to 42nd Street, turn left for 3 blocks, turn right at the stop sign onto Chester Avenue and proceed to the corner of 46th and Chester. The driveway is off of 46th Street.
