Description of Activity/Tour

La Ceiba is located on the Caribbean coast of Honduras. It is the third largest city in the country and is serviced by an international airport. A ferry boat or a 20 minute flight from here takes you to the turquoise waters of the Bay Islands, Utila, Roatan and Guanaja. La Ceiba is a vibrant, lively town which beats to the rhythm of its Latin, Caribbean and Afro-Antillian culture. It is home to the Dole Fruit Company, producers of bananas, pineapples and grapefruits.

The "Zona Viva" is an area along the beach where most of the restaurants and night clubs are located. Central Park is a pleasant shaded area in the centre of town and the beautiful Standard Park just minutes away. There are many hotels, restaurants, and a modern cinema. It is easy to find your way around the city and you can walk cycle or take a taxi for a minimum of cost.

In the outskirts of La Ceiba you can discover, the "Cuero Y Salado" Wildlife Refuge which has monkeys, parrots and manatees among their 35 protected. White water rafting and kayaking are a thrilling attraction and the beaches surrounding La Ceiba are safe and clean. You can ascend into the majestic cloud forest of the "Pico Bonito" Natural Reserve, and hike from near sea-level up to 8,000 feet. You will discover the Fauna the Flora, several exotic waterfalls and incredible views of the Caribbean Coast and the Bay Islands. The Picturesque mountain peak, "Pico Bonito" is a landmark on the north coast of Honduras and without a doubt makes La Ceiba an important Eco-Tourism destination. Eco-Tourism internships are available upon request.

General Description:
Every year, students of all ages (16-75 years), and from many countries and professions, attend Eurolingua's numerous language, cultural, special interest and summer programmes worldwide. Students include private individuals, mature teenagers, university and MBA students, teachers, doctors, professional and business people, corporate executives, diplomats and embassy staff, government employees, military personnel and retired people.

One-to-One Homestays (16-75 years):
Live and study abroad for 1 to 4 weeks, on a full-board basis, in the private family residence of a Eurolingua tutor. You benefit from intensive one-to-one, professional language tuition, enjoy local excursions and share usual family social, cultural and leisure activities. Total immersion in the language, culture and way of life is guaranteed. We collect you at and return you to the nearest airport or railway station. Programmes are available all year.

Group Programmes (16-75 years):
You benefit from a minimum of 15 hours (20 lessons) per week tuition in small friendly groups at one of our Institutes, with cultural visits and leisure activities. In order to maintain linguistic and cultural continuity, accommodation is with a selected, local host family. Studio apartments are also available. Open all year, with and special programmes during the summer.

Typical Day

Situated in La Ceiba, the Institute premises are fully air conditioned for the comfort of students and staff. All programmes (beginners, intermediate and advanced) are on a one-to-one basis, 20 or more hours per week, with a qualified Spanish language tutor. Emphasis is placed on conversation, communication, basic survival skills, grammar and vocabulary. This is the quickest and most effective way of learning to speak and read Spanish, enabling the student to work at his or her own pace.

Teachers are selected on the basis of their teaching experience and active personalities. Some are bilingual which can help, especially beginners, to clarify and speed up instruction between teacher and student.

The Institute is the only language school in Honduras that offers transfer credits from US Universities. Information and application for credit available upon request.

Sleeping and meals

In order to maintain linguistic and cultural continuity, students are accommodated on a full-board basis (three meals per day) with a local, selected Spanish speaking host family.

Other Information

The Bay Islands
Roatan, Guanaja and Utila make up the Bay Islands that are located on the largest barrier reef in the Northern Hemisphere and extend from 20 to 40 miles off the coast of
Honduras. The Islands have a heritage and flavour all their own because they were settled originally by descendants of British privateers. English is so widely spoken on the Islands that many people don't speak Spanish at all. They are home to a flourishing lobster and shrimp fishing industry. Palm trees fringe the turquoise blue and crystal clear waters renowned for the scuba diving and leisure resorts. The Bay Islands are where you can discover an entire world for yourself, whether it be fishing, diving, snorkelling, exploring nature trails and exotic plants or simply relaxing on the beach.
