Description of Surrounding Area
Palmer is a small town with farming heritage located in the heart of the Matanuska Valley where cabbages can grow to 90 pounds under the midnight sun! While here, you can tour Independence Mine, an abandoned hard rock gold mine located in a spectacular alpine setting in Hatcher Pass. Drive to Matanuska Glacier and actually walk on the ice! Visit the Musk Ox farm, the gardens at the Palmer Visitors Center, the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race Headquarters. Watch salmon as they return to spawn in their home streams. You can hike, golf, and fish. In August, check out the Alaska State Fair. Best of all, the river valley and the towering mountains are spectacular. Visit our website for pictures:
