Nantahala River family whitewater rafting adventures in the cool scenic Smoky Mountains. Class 2 and 3 whitewater. Fun and exciting, but does NOT require previous experience. Certified guides available.

Typical Day

Check in to the raft building, where pre-trip instructions will be given. You will be outfitted and transported to the river. You will take an 8 1/2 mile full river trip down the Nantahala River. This clean clear river flows through the scenic Nantahala National Forest on it's way to Fontana Lake. There is almost continuous class 2 and 3 whitewater on the Nantahala, making it a fun and exciting river, but does not require previous experience. We recommend guide assisted unless you have previous experience. Certified guides are available. The total trip time is about 3 1/2 to 4 hours from check-in to check-out. The on-water time is about 2 hours. We pick you up at the take-out and bus you back to the raft building where there is changing rooms and restromms as well as a T-shirt and gift shop. There is plenty of free parking for your vehicles while you are on the river.

Age range, type of group

U.S. Forest Service rules require that everyone must weigh at least 60 pounds in order to raft on the Nantahala. The Nantahala is popular with both beginners and experienced whitewater fans. Many family groups, church groups, scout groups etc. raft on the Nantahala. The Nantahala is also popular with experienced paddlers. The Olympic teams and various whitewater racing teams very often practice on the Nantahala. We have a dam controlled river so we have a good dependable water supply all summer long.

Sleeping and meals

We have vacation lodging homes, chalets, apartments, and camping cottages available if you need lodging. Linens, including bedsheets, towels, and soap are provided. Kitchens are fully equipped and have basic dishes and cookware. Charcoal grills are available at most locations. There are several good restaurants in the area for dining out. Lodging has air conditioning, TV/VCR, no TV signal in the mountains, but you get 2 free videos per night from the rental collection where you check in and get your keys.
