Description of Active Adventure

La vuelta del nevado Huascaran: The Huascaran National Park Loop is probably our most popular tour. Its a 5 to 6 day bike tour through the heart of the Cordillera Blanca and Huascaran National Park. It crosses two high passes and is all on dirt roads (we have added major singletrack sections) with spectacular views and no traffic. We pass through many small Andean villages rarely visited by tourists. The loop is 242 km so a 5 day trip is difficult while the 6 day trip is an easier trip. Still both are very challenging for the elevations of passes: Punta Olympica at 16,137 feet (4890m) and Portachuela de Llanganuco at 15,767 feet (4767m). Trip is proceeded by 2 days of awesome singletrack in Huaraz.
In 2004 we discovered and began incorporating singletrack sections which are optional. The trip became extremely popular also as a 3-day trip emphasizing the downhills. An awesome loop!
Equipment: Well-maintained 2003/04/05 Specialized FSR Comp full suspension bikes. We believe a good ride with a great guide makes the trip.
For 2006 we also are offering arrangement of logistics for groups without guide: 4-wheel drive vehicle rental with driver is $100/day/meals/hotel; bikes, $30/day/person; tents; cookstoves; cook; mechanic all available for rental. A small charge for organizing logistics for your group will also be charged.

Typical Day

A typical day on tour: Group gets up about 7 to 7:30 a.m. and we are serving breakfast in the kitchen tent if camping or in hotel if staying at a basic hostel. Full on breakfast with all fresh foods, well-prepared by cooks (always Peruvian cuisine). Riding by 8:30 or 9:00 a.m and snacks and extra clothes always available from support vehicle. Stop for lunch around 1:00 p.m. Food excellent! Continue riding until 3 to 4 p.m. When camping tents are set up for you. After arrival at camp/hotel within 1 hour snack is served but later nice dinner with recounts of the day.

Age range, type of group

Generally we get people from 18 (younger if with a group or accompanied by a parent) to 65 who love cycling and our looking for the challenge of one of our tours but also the exposure to the cultural differences.

Sleeping and meals

We camp on the trip for 2 nights and use basic hotels 2-3 nights. When camping we have the tents that we set up ( Eureka Timberline) and serve dinner in a large wall tent with tables where everyone hangs out at night.
In hotels basic beds and we will heat up water so a shower can be taken with our solar shower bottles.
On the 3-day tour we use basic hostals each night.

Rates

3-day tour + 2 days singletrack; Lima-Huaraz-Lima, 9 days is $1050 U.S.
5-day tour + 2 days singletrack; Lima-Huaraz-Lima, 11 days is $1275 U.S.
6-day tour + 2 days singletrack; Lima-Huaraz-Lima, 12 days is $1375 U.S. Costs include: 1) airport pickup Lima; 2) Hotel Lima; 3)transfer to bus for Huaraz in Lima; 4) bus to Huaraz; 5)transfer hotel in Huaraz; 6) 2 days guided riding in Huaraz with our 2003, 2004 and 2005 Specialized Rockhopper FSR Comps, great bikes; 7) Huaraz hotel w/ breakfast; 8) Huascaran National Park entrance fee; 9) tour, with all meals, tents, guides, support vehicles, bikes as mentioned, hotels; 10) Bus to Lima; 11) Transfer Lima hotel or airport.

Keep in mind that we have a list of prices for those independent traveler's who show up at our Huaraz office or preferably book in advance for Huaraz services only that are not in need of all pick-up, transportation and accommodation services in and out of Lima.
These trips still include 2 days of guided singletrack before trip begins.

3 day tour (5 days of guided riding)............$495/person

This is called "Huaraz SingleTrack ExtravaGonzo! With Spanish classes at Sierra Verde Language Center". We will take you on the best singletrack Huaraz has to offer (beginner, intermediate, expert levels).

Also we have added a couple of excellent trips for 2007 called Burro Biking/Trekking where we use burros to carry the bikes up a couple of beautiful passes for awesome technical descents. They both expose you to the best Peru and the Andes have to offer.

Trips 2007: Trips available when you make the date. Best time May through October. May is nice as rainy season is just ending and everything is very green.

Remember the prices listed above are with all arrangements such as pick-up in Lima, hotels and transportation. If you want to lower the cost of the trip come to Huaraz on your own. Still it is important in this situation to let us know and book in advance and we can connect with a group in this manner.
TREKKING AND MOUNTAINEERING: 2007 we are organizing logistics for trekking and climbing trips in and around the Huaraz area. Organization includes tents, cooks, porters or arrieros, and guides.
