Description of Surrounding Area

Lubec, the easternmost town in the U.S., is located at the end of a peninsula that juts out into the broad mouth of the Bay of Fundy. The West Quoddy Head Lighthouse, one of five lighthouses in the immediate area, marks the easternmost point of land at Quoddy Head State Park. The area offers spectacular views that change hourly as 20 foot tides rush in and out through Lubec Channel. The area's many hiking trails range from easy board-covered walkways over coastal peat bogs to rugged ten mile treks along ocean cliffs. For those who prefer to paddle, the waters of Cobscook Bay beckon the oars of canoes and kayaks which can be rented in the general area or launched at nearby boat ramps. If you prefer to sit back and relax while taking in the sights, you can choose from whale watch tours, puffins tours, car ferries, and even a tour of nearby Eastport in an antique Woody station wagon. Whatever you choose to do, you are sure to see wildlife -- humpback whales, minke whales, finback whales, dolphin, eagles, osprey, hawks, seals, moose, and bear are among the species that populate Down East Maine. Beach roses, wild iris, and beach peas grow prolifically along the shoreline. Lubec has some of the only sand beaches to be found along this section of rocky coast. The Sand Bar Nature Preserve, just a 1/4 mile walk from the Victorian, is a mile long sand bar that offers nesting habitat to many bird species and is also a real treat for rock hounds and beach glass collectors. Lubec and nearby Campobello Island, Canada have several restaurants offering family fare and fresh seafood. Lubec also has great coffee shops, ice cream vendors, grocery stores, and even a regional medical center. You will find friendly people, unsurpassed natural beauty, and a truly "laid back" way of life.

Description of Vacation Rental Property

This lovely circa 1900 Victorian home retains many of its original features -- tin ceilings, brass hardware, gorgeous woodwork, and stained glass windows. The house has been newly rehabilitated to retain its Victorian charm while updated for modern living. The first floor offers two living areas -- a living room equiped with board games, books, and TV/VCR/DVD with cable to keep the family entertained and a front parlor featuring a mahogany sleigh bed converted into a day bed and a fireplace with carved mantle and original brass lights for quiet relaxing in the evening. If you simply must work, the house has high speed interent. The updated kitchen (with modern appliances including coffeemaker, microwave, dishwasher, and even a Cuisinart!) retains its tin ceiling, original wood floor, and cabinetry added in 1939. The porch/sun room with day bed and full bath are also located on the first floor. The second floor has two large bedrooms with double and queen size beds. The updated full bath blends the original bath fixtures installed during the 1950s with modern washer and dryer. The outdoor patio provides a picnic table, grill, and lounge chairs. A walking path winds along a row of trees down to the water where steps provide access to the beach and bench seats provide a comfortable perch from which to admire the spectacular views.

2007 rates: January through June $800 per week. June 30 - July 28 $900 per week; July 28 - Sept. 1 $1,000 per week; Sept. 1 through through December $800 per week. (Add $50 per week rent for pets and/or children under age 10 and/or more than 5 people.) Long Weekend stays also available October 21 through May 15. (3 night minimum) **Please add 7% Maine state sales tax to rent**

Other Information

$300 per week deposit (plus and additional $50 deposit for pets and/or young children and/or more than 5 people) due when placing reservation. Deposit acts as reservation deposit until your stay begins, then becomes a damage deposit during your stay. Deposit is refundable at end of stay.

Directions

Off coastal Route 1 between Machias and Calais. In Whiting, turn off Route 1 onto Route 189. Travel approximately 10 miles, watch for signs for Quoddy Head State Park. Turn right on South Lubec Road toward Quoddy Head State Park. Approximately two miles down on the water side.
