ABOUT FREMANTLE

History of Fremantle
Fremantle, set on the Indian Ocean, is one of the world's best examples of a Victorian Port. Fremantle was declared a city in 1829. The city was named after Sir Charles Howe Fremantle who, as the captain of the "HMS Challenger", took possession of the West Coast of Australia as British territory. Settlers soon followed in the "Parmelia" and established the Swan River Colony.

Aboriginals occupied this land for thousands of years before it was taken over by settlers. You can learn much about their history, heritage and culture by visiting the Fremantle Museums.

Fremantle experienced rapid growth in the "goldrush" years, bringing new business to the port, making it a thriving community.

Americas Cup
In 1983 Fremantle became a major tourist destination after Alan Bond's Australia II yacht won the Americas Cup. The Americans had been unbeaten for 132 years and, by winning The Cup, this made Fremantle the place to be. Fremantle was a hive of excitement and every day was like New Years Day. Businesses thrived and the local people developed a new sense of pride in their port city, which still remains today.

Part of the ceremony involves the blessing of the boats after a street procession from St Patrick's Church to the Fishing Boat Harbour. The procession itself is led by a statute of Our Lady who protects the local fisherman.

Directions

From Fremantle Centre:

Head south along South Terrace (from Fremantle cappuccino strip) then run left on to Scott Street. ALN House is on your right hand side on the corner of Scott and Chester Street

From Perth Domestic Airport:

Head out along Brearley Avenue. Turn left on to Great Eastern Highway towards Perth city. This will take you to the Canning Highway entry heading towards Fremantle. Canning Highway will take you to the centre of Fremantle. Once you reach Fremantle turn left on to James Street (at lights). This will take you to Hampton Road. Pass 3 sets of lights then turn right on to Scott Street (street before Dewsons food store). ALN House is 200 meters on your left on the corner of Scott and Chester Street.

From International Airport:

Head out of airport along Horrie-Miller Drive.Turn right on to Tonkin Highway, then left on to Leach Highway towards Fremantle. Leach Highway will lead on to High Street heading towards Fremantle centre. Turn left on to Hampton Road (at light) before you enter Fremantle centre. Pass 3 sets of lights then turn right on to Scott Street (street before Dewsons food store). ALN House is 200 meters on your left on the corner of Scott and Chester Street.
