Active Adventure

The tradition of vineyards in the southern Appalachians extends back further than most people realize. The very idea of making wine in the US was first made popular in the late 18th century in Virginia…by Thomas Jefferson himself. An avid wine connoisseur and well versed in the European varietals, he planted vineyards at Monticello and once declared: "We could in the United States make as great a variety of wines as are made in Europe, not exactly of the same kinds, but doubtless as good." He would no doubt be pleased today to see how far winemaking in the Southeast has come.

Typical Day

Bicycle through the rolling terrain, of North Georgia, to three of the most promising vineyards in Georgia. Each of them showcase vineyard splendor and mountain beauty, and include the Wolf Mountain Vineyards, Three Sisters Vineyard and Frogtown Vineyards. You’ll experience private wine tastings at each, and a gourmet lunch along the way. The innkeepers and fine wine aficionados will be preparing a special wine-tasting dinner for us. We’ll summit the highest point in Georgia, at Brasstown Bald and continue hiking after lunch, toward Crane Creek Vineyards, where we will have our evenings wine tasting and culinary event. We’ll be crossing the borders into North Carolina, ultimately en route to the Yadkin Valley region where many of the top Carolina vineyards thrive. Nonetheless, arguably wine-making in the state of North Carolina began on the Biltmore Estate. Once we arrive near the estate, we’ll enjoy a refreshing and relaxing float down the French Broad River that ends at the footstep of the Biltmore Winery. From there we’ll enjoy our wine tasting experience before enjoying an excellent dinner, further showcasing their wines, this evening at our top notch accommodations. Our final regional destination is the rolling countryside west of Winston-Salem, NC. Our bicycle loop meanders past fields and forests, on our way to three of North Carolina’s best vineyards; including the Westbend, Hanover Park and RayLen Vineyards. Enjoy meeting the vintners, as you sample the fruits of their labors which have earned them the coveted viticultural appellation for the Yadkin Valley.
