Active Adventure

Our aim is to offer an intimate and personal experience to our clients affording them the best that East Africa has to offer in terms of the African "Bush" experience. We offer rides to different destinations and which itinerary you choose depends totally on the experience required and the riding skills of the riders.

Makoa-Farm is a fully working 358-acre coffee farm with the perfect terrain for walking, horse riding or just relaxing. In addition to 26 horses it is home to a variety of interesting and fun animals such as donkeys, pigs, cattle, small four-legged creatures like rabbits and guinea pigs and different kinds of poultry and fowl. It will cost you already a few hours to visit all the Makoa-residents and they are all keen to get some attention from visitors.

Further there are safaris to different destinations where we accommodate guests in a comfortable fly-camp, e.g. our Kilimanjaro Big Game Trail. Between the highest point in Africa, Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru we explore the West Kilimanjaro Wilderness, encountering amongst others elephants, buffalo, zebra, giraffe and lots of different antelope. This is a mobile tented safari for 2-6 experienced riders at a time, making it a very personal experience.

We, your hosts, are both veterinarians and ensure the condition of the horses. Even in the challenging circumstances in the bush the condition of the horses is superb, they are very well trained, fit and surefooted. Rides are at all paces where the terrain permits. The horses are Warm blood, some Arab and Thoroughbred and X, all ridden with bitless tack in a loose rein and relaxed style. There are quality and very comfortable treeless and trail saddles available.

We tailor your horseback safari according to your schedule and requirements from 3 to 11 days. For each tour we offer an alternative program for non-riders, so nobody needs to stay behind.

Typical Day

On Makoa-Farm: Itinerary for meals, activities, excursions etc. as agreed with the guests.

On Safari: Occassionally an early morning ride, usually breakfast at 7 a.m., afterwards start for a 3 - 4 hours ride. Our support vehicle brings lunch to a scenic point where we have picnic. After an extended lunch break another 2 - 3 hours ride to the evening destination, where our crew already set the camp. After a welcome drink a hot shower is waiting for you while the camp chef prepares a delicious dinner.
Some itineraries include a night game drive in an open vehicle.
Enjoy the sparkling stars with the drink before you retreat in your tent and listen to the sounds of the night.

Age range, type of group

For Makoa-Farm holidays: No age restrictions! Anyone who likes to be active, while hiking, on bicycle or on horseback or, enjoys farmlife, nature and scenery is most welcome. Also those who like to experience African landscape from the veranda, after a Kilimanjaro climb or as a refreshing change from being enclosed in a safari vehicle. For families, couples, singles and kids of all ages.

Sleeping and meals

On Makoa-Farm: Accommodation in our intimate lodge featuring two cottages with private verandas and view of Mt. Kilimanjaro, a guesthouse suitable for families and a comfortable room in the main farmhouse.

On safari: High comfort tents, twin accommodation, thick matresses, pillows and blankets, towels, shower tent for bush shower, toilet tents and wash basin.

Picnic lunch on a scenic place, usually under one of the trees so typical for the African landscape, like Fig or Acacia tree. Dinner under the stars or in the mess tent.

Produce from our own farm and kitchen garden is used to prepare the wonderful meals on offer. Whether on Makoa-Farm or in fly-camp the food is always prepared fresh and most of the ingredients are produced on the farm. This includes most vegetables, meat, milk and milk products. Expect to find every morning freshly home baked bread on your table as well as homemade pastry in the afternoon.
