This is the first project of its kind and as far as we know the only possibility in all of Brazil to experience the tranquil life in a favela. All of the approximately 1500 inhabitants of the favela will great you in a very friendly way, and you will find lots of friends among other backpackers as well as among the people who live near our hostel.
We have four double rooms and a dorm room. All rooms have a balcony with beautiful views. They also all have private baths, and a big tropical breakfast is included in the price. Hostel owner Andreia also cooks up a delicious dinner if you like. A large living room and a huge (120 m²) rooftop terrace is part of the hostel. Bananas, jack fruit, passion fruit etc. grow in the garden. As there is no car traffic anywhere nearby, about the only sounds you will hear is from the humming birds or the occasional rooster in the morning ;)
Still, you are only a five minute walk from either the metro station at 'Largo do Machado' which will take you to the Copacabana beach in only another 7 minutes, or from the 'bondinho', the old little cable car which runs through the beautiful artist´s district in Santa Teresa and right down to the center of Rio and the nightlife district 'Lapa'.
Since there are no roads in front of our hostel, the only thing you will have to put up with is walking a small hill up (or down, wherever you come from) to reach home. This paths leads you through so many beautiful houses and trees, playing children, and old women chatting, that you would wish your stay was longer...
The favela is secured by police and by the proper inhabitants. It has been absolutely quiet for the past 6 years, and many special programs guarantee it to stay this way.
If you are looking for something very special during your stay in Rio, come to Pousada Favelinha and experience Rio de Janeiro the way only very few foreigners ever see it! The German-Brazilian owner couple Holger and Andreia heartily welcome you to the place where dreams come true!
There are two ways to get to the hostel - from below or from above:
From BELOW the way begins at the "Largo do Machado"-square, which is conveniently located in the district of Catete/Laranjeiras and has a Subway station of the same name.
There is a small bus departing directly in front of the church of the sqaure during the entire day until 11 p.m. - it leaves approximately every 10 minutes and costs R$ 1,50. It takes only five minutes with this bus to the top of the dead end street (Rua Pereira da Silva) which is the beginning of the favela.
Just stay in the bus until it turns at the top of a little hill at the end of a dead end street. Get out right after it has turned and climb the hill to the pousada - you will find signs which will show you the exact direction ;) !
Get out and climb up the hill. It will take about 5 minutes, but it´s a steep climb of about 75 meters. Fortunately enough you will be able to enjoy a cold beer or caipirinha on top of the terrace of the "Pousada Favelinha" right afterwards ;)
Getting there from ABOVE is beautiful: The street car of Santa Teresa "Bondinho" takes you from the City Centre or from Lapa directly to the upper entrance of the favela. Tell the driver to let you out opposite "Falete". The address is "Rua Almirante Alexandrino 2024" and access is through the College "Asuncao"
A few white minibuses also take the same way from the "Arcos da Lapa", ask them if they go into the direction "Dois Irmaos" to be in the right bus ;)
The entrance of the college is the entrance of the favela at the same time.
A short stairway leads up a small hill, where you can relax and already take in the great views. Then it´s downhill about three minutes until you see the hostel.
If you take a taxi, also tell the driver the address of the Colegio Asuncao: Rua Almirante Alexandrino 2024
