Why stay overnight in an ordinary hotel? At Karosta you have a unique opportunity to spend the night in a prison which is believed to be even more impressive than the famous Alcatraz in the USA, to sleep on a prison bunk or an iron bed, and to have a real prison meal.

The prison was built about 1900 and until 1997 it has served as a place where militaies served their terms for breach of discipline. Ever since the first years of its existence it has been a place to break people's lives and suppress their free will.

With powers changing, its prisoners changed as well - among them there were revolutionaries, sailors and non-commissioned officers of the tsarist army, deserters from the German Wehrmacht, enemies of the state in Stalin's times, soldiers of both the Soviet army and the Latvian army and other rebels.

Mysterious and inexplicable things are noticed in the guard house - rumbling footsteps, self-unscrewing of electrical bulbs, unaccountable opening of closed doors of the cells … but the appearance of impossible images has come as the most unpleasant surprise to many a visitor.

For those who stay overnight in Karosta Prison we offer the excursion around the prison free of charge.

* It's not an ordinary museum. In here you will have an opportunity to try on a gas-mask, the red tie of a young pioneer or buy a genuine soldier's aluminium spoon. You will see a prison that has endured almost no changes since its beginnings in tsarist times. You will learn about the way its prisoners used to live.

To reach Liepaja from Riga, take Highway A9 - distance 220 km;
To reach Liepaja from Klaipeda, take Highway A11; distance 100 km.
By train
From Riga Railway Station take the Riga - Liepaja transportation line to the Liepaja Station

By bus
From Riga main bus terminal take buses that go via Kalnciems to the Liepaja Bus station.

By bus you can get to Liepaja also from Ventspils, Kuldiga, Klaipeda.
