ABOUT PORTUGALBIKE:

Since 1995 we have been organizing Guided Bicycle Tours in Portugal under the name of BTTour. We have already organized more than 150 Bicycle Tours and more than 7500 people have ridden with us.
In 2003 we decided to offer something else – to show our beautiful country to those who live beyond our borders. We created PortugalBike to share with people all over the world some of the most unique biking experiences.
In 2006 we were Finalists in the PUBLITURIS Travel Trade & Hotel Guide 2005 Awards for the «Best Company of Active and Animation Tourism in Portugal» .

Being a Portuguese-owned Company, we know our country better than anybody else and we want to expose people to places and curiosities about Portugal that only a Portuguese knows! Our target is that you visit Portugal …riding a bicycle! On PortugalBike Tours you have the opportunity to visit our historical, cultural and landscape heritage in our Natural Parks, enjoy the sun and the beaches, and at the end of the day you can recover your strength with an exquisite dinner. You can taste our famous wines, amazing cheeses and lovely desserts, and sample typical dishes of each region of Portugal.

You will rest in cozy and charming accommodations. We always choose 3- or 4-star quality hotels whenever possible in each region. Our accommodations are always the best offer of each region.

WHAT CAN WE EXPECT ON A PORTUGALBIKE TOUR?

PortugalBike Tours are designed so we begin at a certain point and we end elsewhere. You do not start and end at the same place. We think that is the best way to discover Portugal ...riding a bicycle! Read the specific information about each ride to learn more details.

PortugalBike Tours can be Guided (with a Guide) or Self-Guided (with a GPS device with all tracks recorded). The big difference between the prices for Guided and Self-Guided Tours is that the Self-Guided Tours do not include dinners, picnics, energy bars and water during the day. There is always a backup car to provide any assistance you may need. If you want to take a Self-Guided Tour with dinners included, this can be arranged.

PortugalBike Tours have a maximum of 16 participants, and a minimum of two. Larger groups are also possible upon request and according to our availability. Our Hybrid and Mountain Bike Tours are prepared for one week (8 days / Sunday to Sunday) and Road Bike Tours are prepared for 8 or 12 days.

The dates of PortugalBike Tours are according to our calendar, or on request, according to our availability and with a small extra fee. The prices below are for the scheduled PortugalBike Tours. However, if you wish a different date, ask us for prices and availability.

WHAT KIND OF TOURS DO WE OFFER?

There are three types of PortugalBike Tours:

1) Road Bike Tours are on asphalt roads (100%). We always try to avoid roads with a lot of traffic, preferring secondary roads. On these tours, you ride more km/day than on a Trekking Bike Tour. These tours are always Self-Guided (with a GPS device on the handlebar), so that you are completely free to ride at your own pace, but there is always a backup car to give you any assistance you may need. You use a Road Bike (700x23 wheels).

2) Hybrid Bike Tours (or Trekking Bike Tours) are mainly on asphalt/tarmac (more than 50%) with some off-road rolling trails. Usually the tours are a little bit longer than the Mountain Bike version tours. It is the best and most relaxing way to know a country by bicycle while also having fun. These tours can be Guided or Self-Guided. You use a Trekking Bike (700x38 wheels with a little front suspension).

3) Mountain Bike Tours are mainly on off-road rough trails (more than 50%), sometimes technical, with very little asphalt/tarmac. You need some biking skills and you need to be in good shape. Usually, these tours are a little bit shorter than the Hybrid Bike tours. It is the best way to know a country and feel the challenge of nature. These tours are always Guided (ask us for self-guided); you will only have to follow your guide through wonderful single-tracks in nature. You use a Mountain Bike (26x2.1 wheels with front suspension and hydraulic disc brakes).

Our target is that people visit Portugal …riding a Bicycle!

DIFFICULTY LEVELS:

Each PortugalBike Tour is classified according to its difficulty level, from 1 to 5. Level 1 is the easiest and level 5 is the most difficult.

- Levels 1 and 2 are for Beginners (You are not in good shape)
- Level 3 is for Intermediate Bikers (You must be in good shape)
- Level 4 is for Advanced Bikers (You are fit and in good shape)
- Level 5 is for Expert Bikers (You are in very good shape! You are a winner!)

Besides the classification for overall difficulty level of each PortugalBike Tour, each day is also classified from 1 to 5. When the trails are difficult, we ride less km/day and when the trails are easy, we ride more km/day. Please note that the purpose of PortugalBike Tours is not to train, but only to enjoy your bicycle, nature and environment.

SUMMARY
Sintra-Cascais Natural Park is one of the most beautiful Natural Parks in Portugal, with its maritime coast and the majestic and romantic Sintra Hills. The tour starts in the rustic region of Mafra, full of charm and friendly people, and rides towards the coast. You’ll also visit Cape Roca, the westernmost point in continental Europe - where the land ends and the sea begins - where there still reigns the spirit of faith and adventure which took the Portuguese caravels in search of new worlds. But the highlight of this PortugalBike Tour is the visit to the great and majestic Sintra Hills – classified as World Heritage by UNESCO – once the residence of many kings and queens, earls and barons and the Portuguese bourgeoisie. There are many palaces in Sintra (Palacio Nacional de Sintra, Palacio Nacional da Pena, Castelo dos Mouros, Palacio e Quinta de Monserrate, Palácio de Seteais, etc.) and the lush forest hides the most beautiful natural spots. All of this presents a very romantic and mystical environment; an enchanting and majestic place where no one can remain indifferent to the charm of the hills. The tour ends with a ride along the Cascais and Estoril coast to Lisbon.

TESTIMONIALS
»»»» About PortugalBike I would like to stress the good quality of the bikes and the use of GPS (it gives us tranquillity and independence in a self-guided tour). Let me also point out the quantity of information that was supplied and the splendid hotels that were booked. This was our first experience in this kind of tours and, thanks to the good work that was performed by PortugalBike, we intend to repeat the experience.

»»»» It was just AMAZING!! We liked the Tour very much. We had a fantastic week of holidays, with amazing views, and we are already missing the Sun of Portugal. The meals were very good and everything was very well organised. Thank you again and we will be back next year.

2. THE WILD ISLET AND THE MEDIEVAL VILLAGE
(Guided or Self-Guided)

DATES FOR 2008
18 ~ 25 May
15 ~ 22 June
13 ~ 20 July

TOUR HIGHLIGHTS

7. Nazare - the most typical beach in Portugal
8. The Natural Park of Candeeiros Hill
9. The beautiful caves in the Natural Park of Candeeiros Hill
10. The world-famous Fatima Sanctuary

SUMMARY
The Royal Ice Factory is a small construction dating back to the 18th century, which is considered by the International Committee for the Conservation of the Industrial Heritage as a “unique example in the world due to the originality of its structures and its reasonably preserved condition”. And this is the place, at the top of Montejunto Hills – which is a Protected Area – where this PortugalBike Tour begins. Another interesting point of this tour is the Peniche Peninsula, a place of fishing traditions and from where you can admire one of the largest fishing and diving sanctuaries – the Wild Islet of Berlenga, also known as Berlenga Natural Reserve. This is a wonderful place to take a swim in the clear waters on the coast of this islet. Another highlight of this tour is the Medieval Village of Obidos. Originally a Roman village, it was taken from the Moors in 1148. Its castle is classified as a national monument and it is a perfect example of a medieval fortress. This is a “village-museum”, perfectly preserved and walled by its high walls which perpetuate its medieval character. The next day, you will ride along the beautiful Atlantic coast towards Nazare, the most typical beach in Portugal. This is a place full of old traditions and today we can still see fishermen drying fish under the sun as they did in the past. This is also a wonderful place to refresh ourselves in the blue waters or take a walk along the golden sand. Finally, there is a visit to the Natural Park of Candeeiros Hills where you can admire some traces of prehistoric life in the landscape. You will also have the opportunity to visit the most beautiful caves in Portugal with their stalactites and stalagmites. This PortugalBike Tour ends with arrival at the world-famous Fatima Sanctuary.

»»»» My wife, my son and I went on a Hybrid Bike tour with PortugalBike and had a great time. The service was first class all the way from making the reservation to the conclusion of the ride. The ride was fantastic and Jose who was our guide was fun to be with and rode at the appropriate pace for everyone involved. He was a wealth of knowledge about the country and the specific area that we were riding. Even the van ride to and from the ride was enjoyable with great conversation and information about the area. The lunch provided was delicious and far better than I imagined. The people of Portugal are very friendly and the country is beautiful and well suited to mountain or road biking. If you haven't considered Portugal for a biking destination, please do. I highly recommend PortugalBike for any biking tours in Portugal. Again, thank you very much for the wonderful time.
= Jeff Austin (Las Vegas - U.S.A.), 2007 =
»»»» Thank you for the best vacation ever. I can honestly say it was custom made for me!! (...) «The Wild Islet & the Medieval Village» tour have shown me that Portugal is a diverse country. I feel like I saw it all in 8 days, without any travel stress. (...) PortugalBike is a complete destination management company. I am so impressed with your company and I am telling everyone; you were «tour guides», personal trainers, translators, concierge, taxi, caterers, historians, friends and professional business operators. PortugalBike takes care of everything, all you need to do is ride and enjoy!! Great home made lunches, excellent local restaurants, transportation and translation services you will be thrilled with your vacation. The time I spent off the bicycle was as interesting and diverse as during the ride. PortugalBike is priceless and you (Jose & Cristina) are a pleasure. Spending a week with 2 total strangers and trusting their judgement was a concern of mine before selecting my trip. I recommend you both on your character and integrity; you are both excellent people (personally and as business owners). I HIGHLY recommend this trip to everyone and anyone who has a pulse and a desire to see a beautiful country. By bike, boat, foot, land, sea and van, we covered the city of Lisboa from top to bottom, ocean coast, cliffs, beach, islands, mountains 600m up, caves 60m under, castles, desert, farms, countryside villages, vacation hot spots, nature preserves and island, fancy hotels, manor houses, converted olive factories, ostrich farms, sheep herds and my favourite - Obidos, the city inside the castle walls, it's amazing. Thank you again for everything!

DATES FOR 2008

7. Evora - classified as World Heritage by UNESCO
8. Fields with wild flowers and olive trees
9. Beautiful, white marble quarries
10. The Highest Anta in the Iberian Peninsula (pre-historic monument)

SUMMARY
Alentejo is a scarcely populated region with open horizons, where the rhythm of life follows the idle sound of regional songs. It is perfect for riding a bicycle and experiencing an unforgettable adventure. This is a land of unimaginable heritage. The tour will take you along the remarkable traces of ancient cultures: dolmens and cromlechs, Roman and Arab vestiges mingling with the most recent signs of Christianity of which the numerous medieval castles are but one example. You will ride alongside vast wheat-fields and vineyards where intense green and golden colours are the main characteristic of the plains in Alentejo. One of the most typical sights in this region is a vast field with some cork trees here and there and the herds (sometimes sheep, sometimes pigs or cows) usually enjoying the shade of the trees. The villages with their whitewashed one-floor houses are a picturesque landscape in Alentejo. You will have the opportunity to visit Evora, which is classified as World Heritage by UNESCO, and some other beautiful villages, such as Estremoz, Vila Vicosa and Monsaraz. The people here are very proud of their heritage and they preserve the ancient buildings and also the ancient practices. This is a region that has a very rich handicraft tradition – pottery, embroideries, hand-painted furniture, wrought-iron works, etc. The local gastronomy is varied and quite tasty and perfectly matches the famous local wines. This is a tour where the quietness and silence of the endless landscapes invite us to share nature in a rural environment and socialize with the people that live and work there. This is a spectacular tour characterized by moderate physical and technical difficulty and it takes us to the most ancient vestiges of our history and heritage.

»»»» Regarding our tour, we spent a marvellous week in Portugal and were happy to discover the nice countryside of the Alentejo. This week out in the wonderful nature, discovering lots of nice trails and some cultural sites made us really forget everyday's life. It was fantastic and we enjoyed very much the perfect organisation and your company, while riding the bikes, around the pick-nick-table or during one of the nice dinners together with you. PortugalBike is a great team that we can warmly recommend to all our friends. We hope to see you again, perhaps on another tour.

»»»» Although the Tour was not difficult, we feel like a personal victory to get to the end. We loved the ride and the beautiful sceneries. We also liked the picnics a lot; it's great to eat admiring the landscape and listening to the birds and feeling the presence of animals. Everything was very well organised and we really appreciated how you quickly adapted the programme to our riding capacities.

SUMMARY
SW Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park extends itself along the Portuguese coast and is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean;. This SW landscape is 300 million years old and it is one of the most preserved landscapes all over Europe; human intervention has been less visible throughout its history. Once submerged (about 2 million years ago), this is a vast area with many different coastal habitats and countless beaches and cliffs. Our daily tours include going to the wonderful beaches of this Natural Park and taking a swim in the clear, blue sea. Cliffs are steep, almost 100m high and right above the ocean. Countless rocks and isolated islets complete this beautiful and unique scenery. You will see the islet of Pessegueiro, a short distance out to sea, which has archaeological findings that date back to the Iron Age and Roman times. This area boasts a diversity of rare botanical species, with very interesting flora and a variety of maritime birds that nest here.. S. Vicente Cape is a passing area for thousands of birds of prey. The tour also goes to Sagres, which is the southwestern-most point in continental Europe, the place from where our brave forefathers sailed on their caravels seeking new peoples and continents. Finally, you will visit some of the beaches of our famous Algarve including the cosmopolitan city of Lagos. This is one of the oldest towns in Algarve. We can still see evidence of the wall surrounding the town for protection. Lagos also has an old fort and its former Slave Market is now an art gallery.

TESTIMONIALS
»»»» (…) The tour not only MET my wishes and expectations, it far EXCEEDED them. I loved every bit of it (even having to walk on 2 of the steepest hills), and would do it again "in a heartbeat" as we say here in the USA. (…)The fact that we were hardly ever on a busy road in Portugal increased our enjoyment of the scenery tenfold! (…) Beyond that, I want to add how much I appreciated "the little things" that were actually quite big... like picnic tables in beautiful spots, delicious cheeses, bread, and other treats, luggage waiting for us in the lobby of our hotel, and some of the best dinners I've ever had on a vacation.
= Martha C. Scala (California – U.S.A.), 2007 =
»»»» (…) It was not only beautiful scenery and great biking, but a fantastic culinary experience as well! PortugalBike is a family run company, and Jose and Cristina were great hosts and guides.
= Maria Pacella (Canada), 2007 =
»»»» (...) We consider ourselves very fortunate to have had Jose as our guide. Not only does he operate an exemplary business but he is a well informed person who willingly shares Portugal's history and culture and he truly cares about the people on his tour. He provides excellent service to his customers. (...) We were so pleased that our tour travelled along the west coast as we saw breathtaking scenery. The cliff colours due to soil variations and the ocean colours and sounds were unbelievable. We were fortunate to bike not only along the coast but across pastoral areas that were green, relaxing, and totally enjoyable. We view ancient fortresses and castles, farmyards, olive groves, and cork trees (...)

SUMMARY
This PortugalBike Tour is full of history. The routes will take you to remote times and places where great battles were fought and great conquests were achieved. These are places where we can almost breathe power and glory. The Seven Castles Route starts in the Alentejo tourist region by visiting Castelo de Vide. You will see its castle and typical rows of white houses that surround it; and then the beautiful and grandiose Marvao castle, located at the top of a walled village, once eagerly desired by ancient peoples. The trails in this region are mostly medieval paved paths and we can see evidence of Roman times. This is a unique and incredible landscape with the constant presence of enormous rocks that have existed for millions of years. The third castle is Almourol, an interesting little castle that is located on the river Tagus. A small boat is used to cross the river. The next day, en route to Obidos, you will ride along the Baleal Peninsula and have the opportunity to take a refreshing swim in the ocean. The medieval village of Obidos is enclosed and protected by the great wall that belongs to Obidos castle – this is the fourth castle. The Tour continues with a visit to Sesimbra Castle, which presents a beautiful view over the beach of Sesimbra and the sea. You will also visit Palmela castle which also provides a wonderful view. The Tour ends with a challenging climb to the Castelo dos Mouros (Moorish Castle) in the majestic and grandiose Sintra Hills - classified as World Heritage by UNESCO.

TESTIMONIALS
»»»» I would have to say that it was one of the best holidays we have had as a family. The trips on the internet were described in detail hence there were no surprises about the trips. PortugalBike is a well run company. Whether your trip is guided or not you are provided with interesting and important information about the treks. Our guide was friendly, polite and well informed about each area we visited. Most important, because we took the self-guided tour, we felt if we had any mechanical difficulties help was close by. PortugalBike thinks of everything you need for a healthy active sport holiday. After our first experience with PortugalBike, we are already planning our next trip. We were extremely pleased with the professionalism and the selection of treks available. PortugalBike was also flexible to meet the needs of our family. The accommodations were super! What a wonderful way to experience the beauty and history of Portugal; it is full of surprises! Thanks for the wonderful trip in Portugal. We enjoyed it very much and was a great experience for all of us!

Age range, type of group

PortugalBike Hybrid Bike (or Trekking Bike) Tours are designed for couples and singles. Participants are usually 35-65 years old.

The spirit of our tours is not competition and this is not training. The purpose of PortugalBike Tours is to have fun and enjoy Nature and the wild and still intact environment, to get to know different people and to spend unforgettable holidays in a sunny, warm and welcoming country without stress!

Usually, in a PortugalBike activity when you have many kilometres to ride, their difficulty is low; when the terrain is difficult, you ride less kilometres each day. Moreover, tours are designed so that a very difficult day is not followed by another very difficult day. In the middle of the week there is usually a day when you do not ride; this is good so that your body may rest without the bicycle and you can enjoy other activities (shopping, sightseeing, going to the beach, etc.).
We always have a long sunny day to ride our bicycles without stress and at our own pace; we are not competing or training. Our purpose is to make you enjoy our country while riding a bicycle.

Sleeping and meals

PortugalBike groups stay at 3 and 4 star Hotels, and at Rural Tourism (or Tourism in the Country) accommodations; these are cosy and charming cottages or Manor Houses converted into small hotels. The quality of many of these places is similar to 4-star hotels. Accommodations are always the best offer of the Region. We always look for beautiful and comfortable places, showing some of our traditional architecture and heritage where you can rest and enjoy the landscape. Many of these places have a swimming pool, where you can relax at the end of the day. Breakfast is included in the rate.

Rates

You must add the price of Accommodations to the price of your PortugalBike Tour. The price of PortugalBike Tour is always the same throughout the year, but the price for Accommodations depends on the time of the year. When you receive your Booking confirmation. you will also receive exact details of the respective payment for Accommodations. You will benefit from the best prices for accommodations negotiated by PortugalBike Group. Usually we arrange for double-bedroom occupancy, but in some locations, we are able to book larger rooms/suites/apartments for more than two people, depending on the season of the year. Participants signing up individually will be assigned roommates of the same sex, or pay a single supplement. On some tours, the number of available single-occupancy rooms is limited.
