Whether your taste runs to medieval frescos, ancestral castles, or bear-filled forests, Count Kalmoky’s Estate and guesthouses offers a rare opportunity to immerse yourself in a forgotten way of life by experiencing it firsthand. From late October to early April, winter magically transforms the remote village of Miklosvar (population 512) into a fairytale where time seems to stand still. In fact, winter days are filled with action whether your tastes run to high adventure – skiing, snowshoeing, tracking in the wilderness, birdwatching, discovering the secrets of the legendary cave of the Pied Piper of Hamelin, or the Nagykohavas waterfalls high in the mountains -- or immersion in the ancient and living history and culture of the destination, sightseeing in a horse-drawn sleigh complete with fur blanket and muffs, discovering ancient castles and fortified churches, or winetasting with the local Saxons. By night, the cozy village and comfortable guesthouses welcome weary explorers home to an evening of good conversation, hearty cuisine and world class Romanian wines, and a distinct feeling that the 21st century is worlds away.

Winter is the most beautiful season in our village. It usually lasts from the end of October to the beginning of April. You not only feel to have been transferred into a fairytale, but also have the impression of time standing still. But don’t worry, we’ll keep you active!Skiing. During the day you can ski at Poiana Brasov resort. It is at little more than one hour’s drive, situated at 1900 m altitude with 13 trails in all range of difficulties, an average annual snowfall of 70 cm, 8 drag lifts , 3 cable car, 1 skating yard, 2 sledge piste. The longest slope is 3.8 km long. In the evening you will return to our cozy village. Tracking in the wild. After snowfall our wildlife guide will let you discover the traces of all large and small carnivores and mammals and observe birds you might not see in other parts of EuropeHorse-sleigh riding. We have several sleighs in our village. You will be taken for a ride equipped with a fur blanket and muffs for your hands. Our guests often see deer and other animals during their ride. The ice gorge and cave. You can cross the river on the ice to reach the Pied Piper’s cave. In it’s entrance hall hundreds of man-high stalagmites of ice are growing, resembling transparent-blue shapes of children. Snow-shoeing. We usually have such heavy snow, that hiking becomes impossible during winter. Our snow-shoes will help you discover our fairy tale landscape and wilderness. Bird-ringing of wintering birds at feeding places.Culture. And, of course, all of our cultural sites can also be visited in winter. Our vehicles are well equipped for winter conditions.

Owed and operated by the Count and his family and staff, the Guesthouses provide visitors with the gracious hospitality and authentic atmosphere of a bygone era and just enough modern day luxury and comfort -- central heating, bathrooms with hairdryers, a sauna, and a satellite system -- that enable you to experience rural life without living like a peasant.The guestrooms are furnished exclusively with antique Transylvanian furniture. We have taken particular care in making beds and seats comfortable, creating an atmosphere of peace and tranquillity. All rooms have double beds with specially manufactured mattresses of pure wool and duvet covers. Each room has its own electric kettle, with both tea and coffee provided. Comfort is a priority, and we have paid particular attention to bathrooms and by building a sauna. The heating system is also original and based on wood-stoves.Breakfast is served in a picturesque kitchen. Lunch and dinner can be served either in the dining room, under the arbors in the garden or in the wine cellar. We have extra living rooms and a billiard-room for bad weather or calm hours. You can enjoy vintage liquors and fine books in comfortable armchairs in front of the fireplace (and a satellite-TV set is also accessible if you really can't do without it!). Our cuisine is mainly based on products from our garden or produced in the village. The bread is fresh from the oven. We do not use pesticides or chemical products. Our menus also contain local dishes, which we feel you will be pleased to discover. You will often have picnics during your trips and a rich dinner in the evenings. The meat and milk comes mainly from animals raised in the village and on its pastures.

Bears and wolf tracking
Follow animal tracks in the wilderness of our hills. This is one of the last places in Europe with a large wild bear population. We offer trips into the woods at dusk and dawn in search of bears and wolves and day-long hikes through the hills tracking their traces and footprints. As the animals live in the wild, we cannot guarantee success of watching them, but chances are quite good to see them in their natural habitat.

Bird watching
Through every season you can observe birds already rare in other parts of Europe. Black storks nest here, as well as night-jars, bee-eaters, kingfishers, wall-creepers, corncrakes, lesser spotted eagles, ural owls and a large variety of other birds of prey.

Hiking Cross
Miles of uninhabited hills and woods, streams and pastures. We can drop you in the wilderness by Land Rover and you'll have to find your way back to the village or enjoy the company of a guide.

Culture and History of Transylvania
We have prepared several itineraries for you, some more in-depth with contact to the Saxons themselves, a guided tour will lead to discover medieval cities: Schäßburg (Sighisoara) and Kronstadt (Brasov); fortresses: Törzburg (Bran), Reps (Rupea), Keisd (Chizd), Rosenau (Râsnov); fortified churches in untouched and often deserted villages: Weisskirch, Hamruden, Draas, Katzendorf, Tartlau, Honigberg… Many of these fairy-tale-like places are listed as UNESCO "World Heritage.
