Description   The Kraal Backpackers

The Kraal is a unique backpackers, situated in a beautiful and remote Pondo Xhosa tribal area of the old Transkei. We lie in a natural amphitheatre overlooking the ocean. We are located about 40kms from Port St Johns.

Directly behind us flows the Sinangwana River through wild coastal forests out onto a stunning unspoiled beach. The natural surroundings allow us to enjoy dolphin sightings most mornings, while fish eagles and ravens soar above us.

All of our structures face out over the sea, so you can enjoy the fresh air or just listen to the waves breaking in the small valley near the site. A large entertainment and eating area lets everyone find their own space and meet with fellow backpackers! Long white beaches, rolling hills and natural valleys will ensure the most unforgettable stay.

Directions

By Car
From Umtata:
Take the R61 towards Port St Johns. About 80kms down the road you will find the Tombo Trading Store on the right. 150 meters past the Store is the Mpande. Turn to the right – The Kraal is 20km down this road. Just follow the wooden sign boards.

From Port St Johns:
Travel 20kms on the R61 towards Umtata until you come to the Mpande turn to the left. The Kraal is 20km down this road.

Tombo Stores Baz Bus drop off:
The Baz bus drops at Tombo Stores where the Kraal built a taxi rank, so you can sit and wait for a local taxi.
There is a man who organises taxis for backpackers.

Umtata bus drop off:
If you get dropped in Umtata please let us know 24h before as we have three taxi drivers making pickups in Umtata.

Port Saint Johns drop off:
The Sunrise Bus runs every day except Sundays leaving from Port St Johns, and there are loads of taxis departing from PSJ taxi rank who know The Kraal.
