Ancient Monastic Site:Clonmacnoise was founded in 545AD by St Ciaran. The monastic ruins consists of a cathedral, two round towers, 8 churches and 3 high crosses.. There is also the remains of a 13th century castle. There is a modern interpretive centre and tourist office on the site. Birr Castle Demesne:Features Irelands Historic Science Centre. In the Grounds is the Great Telescope built by the Earl of Rosse in the 1840's and the most wonderful gardens you will want to visit.Golf:There are at least five excellent golf courses within easy reach of Banagher. The closest, the 18 hole Birr Golf Course is only 8 miles away. Other courses include: Roscrea Golf Course, Tullamore Golf Club, Esker Hills Golf Course, Glasson Golf and Country Club. There is a fine pitch and putt course in Banagher itself.Cruises on the River Shannon:' The Shannon Queen' sails on the Shannon twice weekly in the Summer. Birr Equestrian Centre: Trek on boglands and forest trails with wonderful views of the Slieve Bloom Mountain, Programs tailored to individuals needs.

Vacation Rental Property

The Chestnut Cottage was the original home of the McDonald family for generations. It has been lovingly restored, keeping as much as possible of the 'Old World' character of the cottage while adding all the modern comforts. It is located close to the main farmhouse, in a nice farm garden with an orchard.Dogs welcome!LOCATION:The Chestnut Cottage is in the Galway/Offaly area, three miles from the popular riverside town of Banagher in Co. Offaly. The wide bridge which crosses the River Shannon to County Galway opens the way to tour the west of Ireland. Banagher is famous for its Irish music pubs, its river cruises, Bog walks and rail tours, great Fishing, (both coarse and salmon and trout.), Excellent super markets and shops, Restaurants, and Hotels. Most of the pubs serve really good food also.

Sleeps & # of Bedrooms

The bedrooms are two double rooms and two single rooms. Two of the double bedrooms can convert to twin rooms. If you prefer a smaller cottage with only one bedroom two of the bedrooms can be closed off. All bed linen and towals are provided and are included in the rental price. Bathrooms: There are two showers and two wcs, one of which adjoins two of the bedrooms.

The water can be heated by the oil or electricy, or a combination of bothThe kitchen is well equipped with electric cooker, washing machine, fridge, microwave, iron, toaster, and coffee maker, Tea towels and washing-up cloths are provided.The living room has an Aga type solid fuel range (peat turf is supplied free) There is a colour TV and dining and sitting area. Other facilities:For Children The cottage contains a cot and high chair and there is a swing on the chestnut tree for the children.There is a barbeque area at the rear of the cottage in the orchard.For the fisherman there is a lock up tackle shed with fridge-freezer for bait and equipment storage. The rail over the solid fuel cooker is ideal for drying wet fishing gear also there is some drying facilities in the tackle shed. Boat hire locally also bait and tackle.You can have your fire lighted before you return from your days outing on requestA kennel is provided for pets

ANGLINGFlowing through Lusmagh and Banagher the River Shannon is the major waterway in Ireland. The Little Brosna joins the Shannon at Lusmagh and the Grand Canal joins the Shannon just up stream at Shannon Harbour as also does the Brosna River. All these water ways provide unbeatable angling. There are great stocks of fish including salmon, trout, bream, tench and perch in abundance. The area boasts excellent fishing access and facilities, bait shops and outboard boat hire WALKINGThere are several walking routes in the area including the Offaly Way on the banks of the Grand Canal, The 66km Slieve Bloom Way passes deep glens and beautiful waterfalls. The Clara Bog, the Lusmagh bog Walk and Lough Boora Parklands allow you to walk on a flat landscape of unbelievable natural beauty and rare animal and plant species. All these walks promises the tranquility of an unspoiled landscape. The McDonalds would be happy to give any help possible with any aspect of your holiday.

Other Information

You will be welcome at whatever time you arrive at the cottage. But remember to allow time for the cottage to be prepared and ready for you. Directions

From Dublin Airport:Take M50 south to where it meets the N4 which will take you west to Kinnegad. From Kinnegad take N6 to Kilbeggan. Then the N52 through Tullamore,Travel 7 miles, exit onto the R357 at Blueball, left at Cloghan on to R356 for Banagher. (88 miles). From Shannon Airport:Take N18 going south to Limerick. From Limerick take N7 through Nenagh. From Nenagh take N52 to Borrisokane, R438 to Taylors Cross and left in to Banagher. (65 milesFrom Dun Laoghaire PortTake N11 north towards Dublin turning left for Dundrum, Rathfarnham and on to Templeogue to join the M50 going north. Exit onto N4 going west to Kinnegad. From there take the N6 to Kilbeggan. Then the N52 through Tullamore,Travel 7 miles, Exit onto the R357 at Blueball, left at Cloghan on to R356 for Banagher. (100 miles).From Rosslare Harbour:Take N2 north to Wexford. From there take N11 to Enniscorthy. Take N11 towards Dublin for approximately 3 miles. Turn left onto N80, travelling through Bunclody and on to Carlow, Stradbally and to Portlaoise. From Portlaoise take N7 to Roscrea, N62 to Birr and R439 on to Banagher. (117 miles) From Banagher Town: Take the road between Flynns shop and Flynns Pub. SuperValu Supermarket is also near Flynns pub.You will pass the Banagher Concrete works. Travel about 2 miles to Lusmagh Square,(There is a church there with roads going each side of it, do not take either of these roads) Follow the Victoria Lock signs. Take a sharp turn right and immediately turn left. You now have to pass 3 houses on the right hand side before you come to the Chestnut Cottage. The first is a bungalow just on this turn, The second is a new dormer style house, The third is a newly built house with timber rail fence. The fourth house on the right hand side is the McDonald Farmhouse and also the Chestnut Cottage. There is a long stone wall in front of the houses Travel no more than 1 mile from the Church.
