Description of Activity/Tour

The word Aloha has many different meanings. It is often used as a greeting of hello or good-bye. The literal translation of Aloha is, "The Breath of Life". So when you say Aloha to someone it means "I recognize the (same) breath of life within you as I have within, and wish to present from me".

Poetry is a way of making something tangible and true from this breath of life. Please join The Institute for Poetic Medicine and John Fox for Poetic Medicine: The Healing Art of Poem-Making - Living Aloha, at the exquisite healing retreat of Hui Ho’ olana, on the tropical island of Moloka’i in Hawaii.

This workshop provides a non-judgmental and nurturing place to express your life, your whole self within the healing container of a poem. John Fox's passionate support of the creative voice in each person is a catalyst for both beginning and experienced writers.

The Hui Ho’olana Lodge is known for its fabulous homegrown salads and delicious healthy cuisine. Meals are primarily vegetarian plus fresh local fish.

Rooms in the Lodge are non-smoking and will be shared by 2-4 people. If there are any couples, they will have their own room. There are also a few cabins. Consider that you are going to a camp-lodge like setting, with an emphasis on the outdoors.

Moloka'i’s Hui Ho’olana is a non-profit center dedicated to creativity and the arts; it is a special place to discover and explore your own healing voice. Ho'olana means to encourage, to float, to bring into balance - as in righting a canoe. It is a word of hope and inspiration. What a perfect place to rest, relax and write.

John Fox is a Certified Poetry Therapist, published poet and author, teacher and popular workshop leader. He has carried the message of poetry as a healing art across the United
States as well as to Canada, England, Ireland, Israel and South Korea. He has taught as a Poet in the Schools and currently teaches classes at the California Institute of Integral Studies, the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology and John F. Kennedy University.
