Description of Surrounding Area

San Cristobal de Las Casas is the cultural hub of Chiapas, high in the pine and cypress forests, in a beautiful valley. It is a colonial city with great diversity amongst the colorful indigenous villages that surround the area. Quite internationally cosmopolitan but with deep roots that mix the Spanish and Mexican cultures with that of the indigenous. The city features wonderful churches, museums, arts and crafts markets, gardens, and colonial buildings that have been preserved for nearly 500 years. Day trips are easy to see the Sumidero Canyon near Tuxtla, the village of Chamula, lakes of Montebello, rivers and waterfalls of Agua Azul and Chiflon, the Mayan ruins of Palenque, Tonina, and Chinkultic, and other wonderful areas.
