Experience true Karoo hospitality on Ganora, a working sheep farm 7km from the world renowned hamlet of Nieu Bethesda, 60 km from Graaff-Reinet, also near Middelburg and Cradock.Give us one day and we give you 240 million years!
Guided tours to Anglo Boer War engravings, rock shelters with Bushman paintings and a visit to a private fossil & artifact museum with specimens dating back some 240 million years are offered on the farm. The owners will also guide you on a fossil walk to share their discoveries with you. Sheep shearing is explained and demonstrated on request.
Comfortable accommodation for self-drives or groups offer the option of relaxing in the peace and tranquility of the Great Karoo. You will be able to experience the magnificent Karoo sunsets in the vast open spaces.
If you book our quad room, you will stay in the self catering cottage, which has a twin and double rooms on-suite and one room with 2 bunk beds adjacent to the main room. It also has the louge and kitchen. So our cottage can accommodate 6 people including one couple. Other ensuite bedrooms like the cottage at first were used as sheep kraals. Now these rooms, with its thick, uneven stone walls provide very comfortable accommodation, full of rustic charm.
Meals are available if you choose not to self-cater. After dinner you will have the privilege to enjoy one of the best star gazing opportunities in the country.
For the more adventurous there are 4 x4 trails, hiking, swimming in river pools, bird watching or try to climb Compassberg (2502m). Furthermore you can explore Nieu-Bethesda, visit the Owl House and Camel yard of Helen Martins, enjoy the coffee & craft shops, do horse riding, take a donkey cart tour or even make time for holistic treatments.
Day trips can be taken to Cradock where you can visit Olive Schreiner's museum and the Mountain Zebra park. In Graaff-Reinet you can visit the various museums, the Obesa Cactus Garden, enjoy a walk through the town with the most historical buildings and end your day with a sunset visit to the Valley of Desolation.
When entering Nieu-Bethesda from Graaff-Reinet:
Turn right at the only 4 way stop. Turn left at the third street on the left-hand side (also the last left before lusern and sportsfields) with a small sign to Middelburg and Nieu-Bethesda station. After 5km you will find a turn off to the left which you can ignore. 2km further you will find the Ganora guestfarm and excursions sign on the right handside. 1Km after turning right you will find our homestead.
When coming from the North - Middelburg: 2km after you notice the 'Gods Motel' sign on your right-hand side (halfway to Graaff-Reinet on the N9) turn right at the Nieu-Bethesda sign. After 20km you will see our sign on the left hand side. 1km after turning left you will arrive at our homestead.
When coming from Cradock: Turn right at the T-junction (towards Middelburg) After 500 meters turn left towards Nieu-Bethesda for 20km. Turn left at the Ganora signpost and you will find our homestead 1km further.
