There is a COMMON AREA @ THE BALCONY where people hang out. When every shop closes at 9pm and every bar closes at 11pm (so staff and guests can be home before curfew), Spicylaos is the only place in town with no curfew so our guests can still socialize and get some drink. However, we don't want our hostel to be like a late night bar where anyone can come and for security reasons, outside guests need permission from our security guards before entry.

It is the very first backpacker's hostel in Luang Prabang. And it influences good changes to many budget accommodations such as adding Free WiFi and share facilities (so property can offer more for the same price).

It is a UNESCO house. The house was built during the time when Laos had no high tech machines; hand planning woods, home made cement from melting buffalo's skin and mixed with rice straws and lime. It really was a palace of a Laos' prince since 1936 until 1975 when Laos changed the government to republic and cancelled the monarchy. (It is not easy and costly to maintain the old house. However, we try the best we can with a limited budget). Spicylaos is the only real UNESCO house that offers budget accommodation and its still own by locals while most off the UNESCO houses are sold out or long term rent out to the big foreign investors and were converted to mid-range or high end (30-500 US$) accommodation.

Spicylaos was set up and run (for 2 years) by Spicy Team, the same team that created Spicythai, Spicypai and also Spicylaos in Vang Vieng.It is now officially and totally owned and run by a local, Mr. Oudalon (Ou), the first son of the owner of the property. And he decided to make it a party hostel since he has the power and team to support that (Spicy Team still recommend and help for marketing with the idea that it still be a good place for travelers and give job opportunity for locals. We also can see that there is a chance to bring Spicylaos up to the Spicy standard. We highly hope that the messy and crazy parties here won't be out of control and destroy the reputation of Spicy. Party is one thing but not every thing we are good at).

Spicylaos is the meeting point not only for tourists but also for friends and relatives of a big Laos' family who live and work here. Hope you will feel comfortable to meet locals. They are nice and friendly but their English could be better.

"I backpacked around Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia after celebrating the first successful year of Spicythai Backpackers. Lots of my traveler friends said Luang Prabang is a great place and it needs a hostel so I decided to move to Laos to set up another spicy hostel here. Spicylaos Luang Prabang had its doors opened on the 7th June 2008. It is the very first hostel in Laos and it has been successfully run since then. I know that I started a really big thing here not only for travelers to get a good budget hostel to stay and socialize but also for locals to learn about a new style of budget accommodation and to make a living. I only hope that when I leave Laos my local friends will learn enough to keep this place running as good as other Spicy or at least their best.

We created Spicylaos LPB and brought it to 'The Best Hostel in Laos 2008 and 2009'. Now, it will have to rely on the local staff who will take care of it. We hope Spicylaos will be the local hostel which will give a good advantage to both locals and travelers for many more generations"

Directions

Spicylaos is 300m south of Dara Market on Samsenthai Rd. next to the old hospital. It is only 15 minutes walk to the ferry pier and only 15 minutes to the airport or bus station by taxi.
