Description   Villa Serrana Hostel

Villa Serrana Hostel is a member of Hostelling International, the brand name of more than 90 Youth Hostel Associations in over 80 countries, operating 4,000+ hostels: the most important hostel network in the world.

We are celebrating our 50th Anniversary!!!! Uruguayan Hostels Association acquired this hotel in 1958, the first in Uruguay and the most antique in the country, and also in South America. We are proud of it, and this new project is a challenge. After many years of activity, in silence, we decided to “insert” the hostel in the actual world. 50 years of non-stop activity deserves an update.
Along all of these years, we have received thousands of visitors, from everywhere, of all ages, kids, young and adults; all left their messages in our Registration Book, with a common idea: well being.

The cottage is warm and very cosy. Materials used on its construction were stone, wood, and straw roof, typical of the zone. It has a capacity of ten beds, with possibility of extra 6 at the sofa-beds, on shared areas. These features are common to the first hostels in the world, encouraged by its German founder Richard Schirrman. A small cottage in the mountains, to ease the contact and knowledge with the nature. Our aim is to rescue the basic ideals of our association: fraternity, solidarity, and cooperation, among others.

Directions

By car: Take HWY Nº 8 up to Km.145, turn right and after 2 km. you will start to see the first houses of the village. There are signs that will take you to the Housekeeper of the Hostel, named Silvia . She will kindly assist you and take you to the hostel.

By bus: From Montevideo capital city you have two options. The first one any bus with destination “Treinta y Tres” or “Melo” get down on Km.145. (approx ticket cost. $ 160 uruguayan pesos). Alter you get down take the route and walk 2 km to the village. Is not bad, and if the weather is good, is a great exercise and you will enjoy beautiful sightseeing. You can reach Silvia before you arrive to arrange for a pick up if there is a settler’s car available, at an affordable extra cost.

The second option is taking a bus to destination “MINAS” (Aprox. $ 130), capital city of Lavalleja. To make arrangements please note that it take two hours to get from Montevideo to Minas. Once you arrive to bus terminal you can get COSU bus. this bus will take you directly to Villa Serrana. There is a bus stop right in front of the hostel. This bus company departs from Minas Tuesdays and Thursdays 9 am and 5:30 pm. Fifteen minutes after it gets back to Minas.
