Surrounding Area

Moncontour can be found on the border of Vienne and Deux Sevres in the region of Poitou charente. The town houses an 11th century Donjon; pleasure lake with watersports; and numerous forest and riverside walks - in fact the area is surrounded by nature including Sunflowers and melon fields. Moncontour contains all the necessary amenities for a relaxing holiday and they are all within easy walking distance of Le Grand Saule chambre d'hote.
The area is steeped in Roman art and architecture and chateaux. Roman sites: Sanxay, Naintre and Gens all within an hours drive. Route des Roi Anglais (Route of the English Kings) meanders from the coast to the Loire Valley. Poitiers Futuroscope theme park is just over forty minutes drive.
Within five minutes drive: St Jouin des Marnes - a beautiful Romanesque church the site dates back to c300 AD. Chateau Oiron houses both contemporary and historical objects of art.
Further afield: Poitiers and Richlieu; Saumur, Chinon and Tours at the Loire Valley. The Valley des Singes (Ape Valley); Le Geants du Ciel (Giants of the sky birds of prey park) at Chauvigny; L'ille aux serpents (snake island); Montmorillion - ancient town of writing; and Troglodyte caves at Rochemenier and Doue la Fontaine zoo.
The region is said to be the second sunniest area in France.

Accommodations

Le Grand Saule is a large rambling house of history and character that contains an 11th century doorway. The house itself nestles below Moncontours 11th century Donjon which has seen many historical battles.
Rooms at Le Grand Saule are elegant and spacious with original beams and tall shuttered windows. On the ground floor the lounge which is warm and inviting offers both french and english television, a stereo and dvd player and library. The dining area is spacious and looks out onto the sunny patio. Take breakfast or relax on the sunfilled and sheltered patio, or at the rear of the garden, which backs onto the River Dive.
The garden and parking area are secure and private.

Rooms/Suites

Le Grand Saule has a family room which can cater for 5, romantic double room and a self catering 2 double bedroomed apartment. All rooms are elegant and spacious and provide both character and comfort and overlook the very beautiful and sunny garden, the river Dive and the local forest. All rooms are ensuite - a double room having both a power shower and separate antique roll top bath. They have satellite TV and tea and coffee making facilities.
The apartment was newly opened in the summer of 2011 and has two double bedrooms, a shared bathroom with both bath and shower, a lounge/dining area, private entrance and garden/ patio with table and chairs.

The village of Moncontour has all ameneties including bank, hairdressers, restaurant, bar/pizzeria, church, doctors, dentist, boulangerie and supermarket. The town houses an 11th century Donjon which can be visited; a pleasure lake for water sports with a beach, childrens play area, mini golf, and auberge; and numerous forest and riverside walks which offer a great variety of wild life. The area also offers fishing, walking, cycling, horse riding, golf and go - karting. It is possible to swim at the lake in Moncontour, however if you prefer a swimming pool then there are pools at both Loudun and Thouars. There is carting nearby the town of Loudun

Le Grand Saule chambre d'Hote offers family / child friendly accommodation - cot and high chair both available at no charge. We are also happy to accommodate childrens meals.

Rates & Availability

Double room per night from 35 euros
Family room from 59 euro per night includes continental breakfast of fruit juice, fresh fruit salad, yoghurt, croissant, bread or toast and cereals followed by coffee, tea or chocolate.
The self catering apartment rates are based on a weekly rate 325€ for the months of May, June and September and 390€ for July and August 2012. There is the option of three and four night bookings for the apartment - please request rates.
There is also a 10% discount for two weeks or more for the apartment.

Keith and Anji Weston offer a warm welcome to Le Grand Saule Chambre d'Hote which is set on the border of the Vienne and Deux Sevres in the Poitou Charentes region of France. The Chambre d'Hote is based in the pretty historical village of Moncontour and nestles just below the 11th century donjon. The area offers numerous forest and riverside walks, as well as fishing, cycling, walking, golfing, horseriding and there is a water sports lake within 10 minutes walk of the chambre d'Hote.
Keith and Anji have considerable travel and house hunting experience throughout France and most of Europe and would be happy to share their knowledge with you.
Keith originally an electrician in the UK has worked on huge shopping and entertainment complexes including hotels and prides himself on his renovations to the property - keeping character but providing comfort.
Anji - a secretary, a teacher and at one time working in a international hotel chain prides herself on providing every comfort for the guest. She also writes in her part time - when she has any left
