MANJARABAD FORT

The region surrounding by boasts several tourist attractions within Hassan District starting from Manjarabad Fort to Belur and Halebid, the options are numerous.

Built by 'Tippu Sultan' in 1752 AD, Manjarabad Fort is situated about 6.4 Kms from Sakleshpur town, at the height of about 3,240 ft. above the sea level.

BISLE FOREST & GAME SANCTUARY

The “Bisle Gudda” or “Sunny Mountain” is a scenic picnic spot as well as a trekker’s dream-route. The mountain ranges are typical of western ghats of India.

The local forest authorities have built observation decks which is suitable for bird watching. The spot has also attracted famed photographers of the educational TV channels such as Louis Patrick.

JENKAL GUDDA

The Jenukal Gudda (Honey-stone Mountain) is the second highest Peak in Karnataka. The place is known as “Hodachalli”.

The place is very calm and lush green surrounded by thick jungle and coffee estates and is truly a great trekking place.

From the top of Jenukal Gudda on a clear day, one can see the coast of Arabian Sea in Mangalore.

BELUR & HALEBID

Belur is famous for the ancient Chennakesava Temple built in the Hoysala style. Started in 1116 AD, it took 103 years to complete this temple. The temple commemorates the victory of Hoysala over the Cholas in the great battle of Talakad.

The temple is intricately carved with sculptures, friezes & pillars. Belur, was (the earlier Capital of Hoysala Kingdom) built by the emperor Vishnuvardhana.

AGNI GUDDA

The “Agni Gudda” or Parvat as you would have guessed by now means “Fiery Mountain” for legendry volcanic activities in this region.

This location has been an all-time favorite with the youths from Bangalore for trekking, and outdoor camping. The mountain provides a great view of the surrounding rice terraces and a good spot for picnicking and outdoor camping.

This spot also has been recorded on various South Indian and Bollywood movies.

SHRAVANABELAGOLA

Shravanabelagola in Hassan District is 157 km away from Bangalore is an important Jain centre. There is a pond and two stony hills, called Chandragiri and Indragiri.

The town below the hill has the Jain mutt whose walls have very old paintings. Indragiri has the Gommata monolith, 58 metres tall, installed by a Ganga general and scholar Chavundaraya.

SRINGERI

Sringeri, 90 kms west of Chickmagalur town on the banks of river Tunga, is a city with epic associations. The place is said to have been named after Rishyashringa who figures in the Ramayana as the chief priest at the great sacrifice of King Dasharadha. Widely known for the Jagadguru Shankaracharya Mata of the Adwaitha school of philosophy. Sringeri also has an ancient temple of Vidyashankara. Constructed on a picturesque spot parallel to the river Tunga, the temple is a fine example of artistic transition from Hoysala to Vijayanagara style. Built around 1357 A.D., the imposing granite structure encloses friezes of elephants, lions, pouranic scenes, dancers in various poses etc. and figures big and small of various Hindu gods enshrined in niches with ornamental towers.
