The Freshwater Golden Dorado is the most important predator fish of the Paraná River system. It’s a salmon-like fish, with a golden, yellowish color, highly muscular with a big head, which has powerful jaws and sharp teeth. It is an extremely voracious and aggressive creature that feeds on small and large fish. It is the biggest predator of the area and it is well known as the “River Tiger”, because of the furious fight that he develops after being caught by the fisherman. Average weight varies from 4 to 8 kg (9 to 18 lb.), but it is possible to find preys that reach over 20 kg. (45 lb.).

Throughout much of its range, the Dorado is caught in colored or murky waters and generally with heavy spinning tackle.
This complex fish can be found near confluences, on edges of eddies, riffles, sharp bends in the current, and close to overhanging carpets of water hyacinth. It can be fished in narrow runs or on skinny water. Large fish have been hooked in the deep runs as well, so let your guide show you the multitude of ever-changing locations where you can make contact with these fish.

The hook-set for Dorado is similar to that of many saltwater fish such as bonefish or tarpon. Simply raising the rod will not do the trick. A good, solid strip-strike is key in hooking this fish. The guides will be more than happy to instruct you on the most successful techniques.

Patagonia Trout Typical Fishing Schedule:
All of our fishing is in rivers and streams, wading from the coast and sometimes on floating trips and float-tubing. We usually fish from 8:00 to 12:00, lunch at the fishing fields, and the afternoon fishing from 3:00 to 7:00.
