Kayak or canoe the beautiful Llano River in the heart of the Texas Hill Country. The Llano offers class I-II whitewater and unrivaled scenery and solitude, all within 2 hours of Austin, San Antonio, and San Angelo.

Typical Day

Paddle a 5 mile section while enjoying ample swimming, fishing, and nature watching opportunities. Enjoy a picnic lunch and then visit one of Mason's unique restaraunts for a relaxing evening meal.

Age range, type of group

All ages are welcome. While kayaking is better for older children, canoeing is the perfect family sport and is suitable for any age child that can properly wear a life jacket.

Sleeping and meals

The Llano River offers a variety of sleeping options, including very secluded, primitive, camping, groomed campgrounds and RV parks with facilities to , and cozy riverside B&Bs.

Restrictions

You are on a public river and in the company of yourself or your group, so there are no imposed restrictions. It is advisable to keep your dog under control and away from livestock. Local ranchers do not look kindly on wondering dogs. Also, land along the Llano is private, so please respect private property. Wearing of your life jacket/PFD is highly recommended.

Other Information

Mason Texas is our hometown and base of operation. Most of our trips are done alomng the Llano River in Maso, Llano, and Kimble Counties. I am available for trips outside of this area if needed. However, it is less expensive to find an outfiter as close as possible to your paddling destination. I am happy to help you with that for the Texas Hill Country.

Mason is a small town in rura Central Texas. It is a very scenic and friendly place. It still operates on a 9-5 basis for many businesses, with Sunday finding almost everything closed other than restaraunts and lodging, and our grocery store. A few antique shops do open on Sunday.

From May through October, Mason County is home to a colony of 3 million Mexican Freetail bats who reside in the Eckert James River Bat Cave. This is an experience not to be missed.

The Paint Rock Pictograph Site is located a scenic 1.5 hours north, on the banks of the Concho River, near the town of Paint Rock. Exceptional viewings occur during the 2 annual solstices and vernal equinoxes. This is the finest display of pictographs in Texas outside of the Seminole Canyon area. The owners, Fred and Kay Campbel, make the visit extra special.
