Grotto of the Redemption
West Bend is home of the Grotto of the Redemption, the largest Grotto in the world. Frequently called “the Eighth Wonder of the World,” the Grotto represents the largest collection of minerals and petrification concentrated in any one spot in the world. The Grotto of the Redemption is a composite of nine separate grottos, each portraying a scene in the life of Christ and his work of redeeming the world. A museum, gift shop, restaurant and camping facilities are located on the grotto grounds. The Grotto is open year round with guided tours given from May 1 – October 16. Daily tours are every hour from 10 AM – 5 PM. The Grotto is financed by your donations. Suggested donations are $5.00 for adults and $2.50 for children

School House and Post Office
Palo Alto County’s first one-room school was restored in 1976 and moved to West Bend. This school – with its authentic furnishings – provides children and adults with a glimpse of education from the past. In 1998, the town’s original Post Office was restored and placed adjacent to the school. Admission is $2 for adults, $1 for students.

Sod House
This replica of a prairie sod house was used as a temporary dwelling for early pioneers. With the passing of the Homestead Act in the 1850’s, pioneers were given 150 acres of free land if they would live on the property for five years in a dwelling with a door and a window. With no large trees on the prairie, sod houses were the answer until lumber arrived via the railroad. A family of 6-8 would live in a sod house of this size. A loft would be built for the children to sleep. Meals were cooked outdoors in the summer to keep it cool inside. Admission is $2 for adults, $1 for students.

Historical Museum
The museum houses an extensive collection of items from the local area, including early agriculture implements, antique home furnishings and clothing.

Old Fashioned Soda Fountain
This old-fashioned soda fountain, located in The Villager, will take you back in time to the early 1930’s, when malted milks, milk shakes, and cherry, lemon and lime cokes were once standard fare for young and old as they took breaks from work or studies or met friends for relaxing small talk. Adjoining The Villager is the old Mike’s Meat Market building, which was remodeled into a gift shop in 2000.

West Bend Golf & Country Club
The West Bend Golf and Country Club features nine holes of golf on beautiful landscape, surrounded by a gorgeous view, as well as a pro shop, snack bar offering breakfast, and a driving range for practicing prior to tee-off.

Wild Rose Casino
The Wild Rose Casino in Emmetsburg is one of the premier casinos in the Midwest. This 28,000 square foot casino includes 544 state-of-the-art slot machines and 16 table games. Recently opened in 2006, the Wild Rose Casino in Emmetsburg is only a 25 minute drive from Park View Inn and Suites. Casino hours are 8 AM-2 AM Sunday through Thursday, and 24-hours on Friday and Saturday.

Camp Algona POW Museum
The Algona Camp museum was used as a prisoner of war camp from 1943-1946. During that time, it was home to 100,000 German prisoners. The system was comprised of 34 camps that had a significant impact on the economy of the communities in the surrounding areas. The museum is open from April through December and by appointment only between January and March.

Little Swan Lake Winery
The Little Swan Lake Winery is located in Estherville Iowa, a few miles away from West Bend, Iowa. The Winery produces a variety of wines including an exquisite Cabernet. The winery was the winner of the Buffalo Blush Contest.

Lost Island Prairie Wetland Nature Center
The wetland contains approximately 5,000 acres of lakes, marshes, and upland habitat. The wetland’s main purpose is to educate people on nature and serve as a place were nature lovers can relax, enjoy and explore. The park offers an interpretive hiking trail with a wildlife observation deck, and a canoe trail known as the Trumpeter Trail, which provides ten miles of marked water trail connecting three lakes and three marshes.

Iowa Great Lakes
The Iowa Great Lakes are a group of natural glacial lakes in northwestern Iowa. They are the largest natural lakes in the state of Iowa. The three principal lakes of the group are Spirit Lake, West Okoboji Lake, and East Okoboji Lake. This popular area destination is an hour and fifteen minutes driving from Park View Inn and Suites, and is a lovely way to see the natural beauty of Iowa.
