Surrounding Area

Georgetown is one of Maine’s larger islands, with almost 83 miles of rugged coastline, and is connected to the mainland by a bridge. The island has a general store, a post office, a church, three restaurants, an art gallery, a gourmet farm market, and a lobster wharf that serves seafood in the “rough”. The wharf also sells live lobsters and clams that you can cook at the cottage. Georgetown Pottery, one of the best pottery shops in Maine, is located on the island a short drive from the cottage.

The quaint small city of Bath is twenty minutes away with many intriguing establishments in the downtown area, including antique shops, a variety of boutiques and specialty stores, a farmer’s market, and several good restaurants. Bath is a world famous shipbuilding city and is host to the Maine Maritime Museum. The museum includes a restored working boatyard, many wonderful maritime exhibits and a vintage sailing ship. The museum offers boat rides on the Kennebec River as well as "lighthouse lovers" and picnic cruises that include excursions into the ocean. For golfers, Bath has a 18 hole championship golf course.

Scenic boat cruises are also offered by several local captains on the island. In addition, power boats and kayaks are available for rent in the area. There are many uninhabited islands and beaches nearby to explore. The striped bass fishing in the Kennebec is excellent, and you can fish from the rocks in front of the cottage. Guided fishing trips are available from a number of area guides.

There are many picturesque lighthouses close to the cottage. Two are visible from White Rocks. Perkins Island Light is located just south of the cottage, and can only be reached by water. Squirrel Point Lighthouse is directly across the bay from the cottage, and can be reached by a hiking trail.

White Rocks is 10 minutes from Reid State Park, which features the most beautiful beach in the State of Maine. The park includes two beaches, hiking trails, a warm salt water lagoon with lifeguards that provides safe swimming for young children, and numerous tidal pools. We include a free pass to the park with the cottage rental. This pass will admit you to all the state parks in Maine. The Josephine Neuman Wildlife Sanctuary is also located close to the cottage and has miles of hiking trails. Admission is free.

Georgetown is relatively undeveloped compared to other mid-coast Maine communities, and has a small year round population. The island is not a busy tourist area with outlet malls or amusement parks. The pace is a little slower on the island, although there is plenty to do.

Freeport, with its outlet stores (including L.L. Bean), and bustling Boothbay Harbor, with its many restaurants, shops, sailboats, and sightseeing tour boats, are both located about 35 minutes away. There are many other attractions in Brunswick, Wiscasset, Damariscotta, Camden and Rockland (such as seafood festivals, summer theatre and concerts, art museums, etc.) all within an easy day trip from the cottage. And don't forget, the fall foliage in mid-coast Maine is stunning.

Vacation Rental Property

White Rocks is a classic New England shingled summer cottage built in 1909. The cottage is in a private location on the salt water near the mouth of the Kennebec River in mid-coast Maine. White Rocks overlooks a large bay and has beautiful views of islands, lighthouses, and the rocky coastline. You will see lobster boats passing by and lots of wildlife, including bald eagles, seals, ospreys, ducks and great blue herons. The U.S. Geologic Survey map for this section of the Maine coast has the word “View” printed next to the cottage's location.

White Rocks has a screened porch and a deck that both overlook the water. The cottage is in excellent condition and is nicely furnished with a combination of antiques and modern furniture. White Rocks has two bedrooms that comfortably sleep four people. Both bedrooms are located upstairs and have water views. The main bedroom has a queen sized bed, and the second bedroom has two twin beds. A sofa bed in the living room has a full-sized mattress and will sleep two people. The kitchen is equipped with an electric range, a refrigerator, a microwave oven, a coffee maker, glasses, dishes, utensils, and pots and pans (including a lobster cooking pot). A gas barbecue grill is located outside on the deck. White Rocks has a separate dining room, a large bathroom with a full shower, and a comfortable living room. The cottage has a TV, DVD player and CD player. White Rocks has electric heat and the bedrooms have overhead fans. We provide sheets, blankets, towels and kitchen linens.

White Rocks is located just steps from the water and has its own cove. The cottage also has a large lawn where you can play catch, croquet, or simply sit in the shade.

Sleeps & # of Bedrooms

White Rocks has two bedrooms. There is a queen bed in the main bedroom and twin beds in the second bedroom. A sleep sofa in the living room sleeps two people.

Rates & Availability

$875 per week during July and August. $750 per week during May, June, September and October. Maine lodging tax is 7%.

Directions

Take the Maine Turnpike (I 95) north. Take Exit 44 (South Portland). Follow I 295 north through Portland. Follow I 295 north for about 20 miles. Take Exit 28 (Brunswick/Bath). Follow Route 1 north through Brunswick to Bath. In Bath, stay on Route 1. Go across the bridge over the Kennebec River and take your first right (Dairy Queen on corner). Follow Rt.127 south to Georgetown. Look for the Georgetown Country Store and the fire station on your right (about 9 miles from Rt. 1). Take the first right after the fire station onto Bay Point Road (brown house on corner). Follow Bay Point Rd. for about 1/8 mile and take the first right onto West Georgetown Road (white church on corner). Follow West Georgetown Rd. for about 0.9 mile. Take the first left onto Marrtown Road. Follow Marrtown Road to the end (about 1.8 miles). White Rocks is the last cottage on the left at the end of the road before the gate.
