A pack trip with Bear Basin Adventures is a brilliant way to ride and explore the wilderness of Shoshone National Forest. I’ve just come back from a great trip, which was a highlight of my holiday, and lots of fun, well led by Heath. The riding is fantastic, first through forests alongside a deep river valley, then climbing high into the mountains. This is proper wilderness camping, with a fire for cooking and an icy fresh creek for washing. Tasty meals are prepared by Chef/cook Chris on the open fire. Tents are roomy and comfortable, and easy to assemble.
I am a beginner rider, but Heath is an excellent horseman and guide, so I never felt nervous, even when riding across impossibly small mountain passes and up and down steep ravines. On the way to camps, you ride alongside packhorses which carry the camping and kitchen equipment, as well as your own personal gear. This leaves you free to focus on riding one of the lovely horses. Once at the camp, there are the opportunities for day rides without the packhorses, going high onto the snow-capped mountains, and some exhilarating ascents and descents.
