The mid-Atlantic Ocean surrounding Cape Verde is rich with all kinds of marine life, and fishing is the main occupation for the people living here. Species like Wahoo, yellow-fin tuna, sail fish, blue marlin, amberjack and sharks roam the waters, and deep sea fishing is therefore a popular activity for turists as well. Santiago provides a good oppertunity for hiking. The most challenging one being to the top of Mount Antonio at 1,392 meters. While hiking you can enjoy the birdlife of the islands. There are several unique birds, among these are the Cape Verde warbler, the Cape Verde Swift (Alexander’s swift), the Raso Island lark and the Cape Verde lark that is pictured on the 1000 ECV bill. How to get there?

The most comfortable way to travel from Europe to Santiago, Cape Verde is via Lisbon and furter directly to the capital of Praia in Santiago. The airport in Praia is called Franciso Mendes International airport and is referred to by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) using the airport code “RAI”. Flying time from Lisbon to Praia is approx. 4½ hours. When booking your tickets you should be aware that there are large price differences between airlines, so it pays off to spend some time researching. Make sure that the flight goes directly to Praia otherwise it can be a long one.
