Tikal Mayan ruins in Guatemala
Tikal speaks for itself. Tikal is the only place in the world which has been declared both a Natural and a Cultural Heritage site. Our guides will escort you across the border to Guatemala and then proceed onto Tikal. The site is set in within a 225 square kilometers protected area and boasts 5 temples, 3 of which you may climb to the top of.
Tikal & Flores
An early start takes you across the Guatemalan border where our Mayan guide escorts you to Tikal. The adventure continues with a visit to Flores, a slow-paced village with Caribbean sensibility, pastel-colored buildings and friendly people. Flores is situated on an island in Lake Petén Itzá, 45 minutes by road from Tikal National Park.
Actun Tunichil Muknal
The Ultimate Jungle and Cave Adventure!
After a 45 minute drive, we then hike through lush jungles within the Tapir Mountain Reserve before arriving at the caves archaeologist base camp. Here we have lunch before gearing up with helmets and lights and then take a short swim into the cave.
Once inside, witness centuries old stalactites and stalagmites rock formations and Mayan pottery, undisturbed after hundreds of years. On your journey we
ATM Cave
will reveal ancient passage ways, stories of Mayan Gods, skulls and evidence of a Mayan princess burial scene. This adventure is a history lesson of a lifetime. All of our guides are fully trained and licensed.
Xunantunich Mayan Ruins
Overlooking the Mopan River, the ruins of Xunantunich, (Stone Maiden) are located approximately 10 minutes by road from Cahal Pech Village Resort. Xunantunich was known to be a major ceremonial center during the
Classic Period
The most prominent temple El Castillo The Castle
stands a majestic 130 feet high. Xunantunich offers a vast amount of Mayan history and a complete ball court
Xunantunich
has been uncovered for viewing. Because of the extensive archeological work already completed, your guide will be able to explain the historical significance and importance of this archeological site
Post Mayan Experience
After a visit to Xunantunich, enjoy three hours tubing on the Mopan river, followed by lunch at Cahal Pech Village.
Caracol Mayan Ruins
On the way to Caracol we pass through the Mountain Pine Ridge, before reaching the pristine jungle that surrounds the Caracol Archeological site. First stop is the museum which houses many interesting artifacts including a newly discovered ritual mask, still in mint condition.
Next we ascend to the top of "Caana", a massive ceremonial pyramid, which stands 140 feet high and is
Caracol the highest manmade structure in Belize. From the top you will be taken away to ancient times with its intoxicating views. Other highlights, among the numerous excavated and partially excavated structures to explore, are the sky observatory and ball court.
Another highlight is listening to story of Caracol warriors trekking through the jungle to Tikal, 60 miles away, and then defeating them in an epic battle, as depicted by hieroglyphic inscriptions & cryptic glyphs etched in stone stelae, recovered from the site.
Afterwards, time permitting, we stop off at Rio Frio Cave in the Mountain Pine Ridge. The cave has a sandy beach surrounded by boulders the size of rooms with a clear
mountain steam running through. The cave is one-half mile long with enormous openings at each end, which makes flashlights unnecessary to view the cave.
We then move on to Rio On Pools, where one shall be privy to granite and limestone rock formations, cascading waterfalls and wonderful swimming. Other options include a visit to 1000 foot falls or Big Rock falls.
Cave Tubing This is the one everyone raves about! Following a 45 minute jungle trek, enter the river and tube for a mile and a half, in and out of 3 river-cave-systems.Along the way, witness majestic stalactite and stalagmite formations.
LOST VALLEYS OF THE MAYA PRIVATE TOUR
After a 40-minute drive up the Chiquibul trail and through the picturesque village of El Progresso, we hike about 10 minutes through the jungle passing two un-excavated Mayan grave mounds. We then arrive at some massive limestone formations towering 40 to 100 feet high, which are known as the "Lost Valley of the Mayas". Along the way, we encounter caves full of untouched Mayan artifacts and pottery.
You'll also be privy to viewing a Mayan ritual chamber
and a discussion chamber with the seats in their original
Lost Valley
positions. Here you can view the natural orchid garden and an ancient Mayan cooking area. Then while making your way to a hidden opening in the limestone, you'll see protruding from the rock formation, what appears to be a dinosaur skull. Throughout this tour we'll point out the local plants the Mayans used for medicines, food and offerings.
El Pilar El Pilar is located about 12 miles from the town of San Ignacio, near Bullet Tree Falls village. Travel via all-weather roads deep into the jungle and cross over rivers into the Yalbac hills to get to this site well known for its birdwatching. El Pilar is one of Belize’s largest Mayan sites covering about 50 acres of jungle. There are many large temples on site, the tallest of which is about 70 feet high.
Lamanai/Baboon Sanctuary
Lamanai
The ancient ruins of Lamanai are not completely uncovered yet. However, as you walk around you see many temples that are uncovered and many hills that upon closer observation are clearly temples yet to be excavated. Wildlife is abundant around Lamanai. You see and hear howler monkeys and jaguars have been known to be nearby. This is reflected in the stories of the locals as well as the architecture.
The temples you do see they are amazing. They rise from the jungle floor to a spectacular view above the jungle canopy. The temples have many carvings into them of the jaguars and crocodiles that inhabit the New River Lagoon. In fact on one of the temples, "El Castillo", you can climb to the top at your own risk. There is a rope and very narrow, tall, steep steps leading to the top. After about a 100-foot climb you encounter a breathtaking view.
Baboon Sanctuary
The Baboon Sanctuary, near Bermudian Landing is located on a 20 mile stretch of the Belize river, 27 miles from Belize City. This community sanctuary protects the Black Howler Monkeys which are called "baboons" locally. The sanctuary was created when the landowners came together in the region and began following a plan for using their land, the agreement was to leave bits of the forest standing for the monkeys to flourish. This sanctuary offers an amazing opportunity to view these unique monkeys in their natural habitat. Know for their 'howl' they can be heard for miles around.
