Vis, Croatia Hiking & Trekking

Active Adventure
Are you looking for a European walking holiday on a beautiful unspoilt island, with excellent food & wine sourced locally, whilst staying in a small, comfortable, boutique-style hotel or stylish guest-house?
Vis Island, Croatia is widely regarded as the pearl of Dalmatian coast with no mass tourism and a very small population. The countryside is hilly (but not mountainous) with many dry-stone walls and evidence of terraced vineyards from long ago as well as active ones.

Nowadays there is some small-scale farming, vineyards, lemon/orange/olive/almond groves, the occasional field of lavender, and the smell of herbs & wild flowers. Not a lot of fauna – donkeys, goats & hares, mostly (no rabbits) – and the occasional peregrine. The piercing blue Adriatic can be seen most of the time (unless in a hollow) and often on both sides at a high point.
Many of the tracks and trails date from Roman or Greek times and have been recently cleared, mapped and signed - by one of our experienced and knowledgeable English speaking guides.

Other Information
For those that decide to opt out of the afternoon walking session we will arrange for some short architectural and historical tours of the most interesting sites and buildings.
Vis island was first settled in Neolithic times (circa 3,000 BC) and there is much evidence of their cave dwellings in certain parts of the island. Thereafter came the Illyrians, Greeks and Romans - Vis was a renowned exporter of quality wine to the city of Rome.

However, our tours will concentrate on the buildings dating from the 16th to early 19th centuries when it was controlled by the Austro-Hungarians, and for a short but influential period immediately thereafter when the British were in charge.
In this last respect, 2011 marks the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Lissa (Vis) in which one of England's most successful frigate captains, Capt Sir William Hoste, achieved a magnificent victory over our old enemy the French who had a much larger force.

And later, during World War 2, Vis was fortified by the Allies (including the American air force) and was the only bit of Yugoslav soil not to be occupied by the Germans. This enabled Tito's partisans to regroup and with the Allies help reclaim all of their country from the Germans.
A half-day visit to the Blue Cave on nearby Bisevo island is a must. Around noon, when the sea is calm, sunbeams that penetrate through the submarine opening in the Cave, reflect from the white bottom floor and colour the cave in blue and objects in the water in silver.
