We\'re in the heart of lively, upscale San Pedro, only 400 meters from the University of Costa Rica and the student nightlife of Calle de la Amargura. Our newly renovated hostel is 10 minutes by bus from downtown San Jose and walking distance from San Pedro Mall, three supermarkets as well as many restaurants and bars.
Our 14 rooms are a mix of dormitories and private rooms with WiFi all throughout the hostel. We have two full kitchens with plenty of fridge space for your food. If you do not like to cook there is also front door delivery service from nearby restaurants. You can hang out with fellow travelers in the interior courtyard, watch students pass by on the outside terrace or if you just want to chill enjoy one of our two TV rooms. No laptop? No problem. We also have three Internet connected PCs so you can upload all of your photos from the beach.
San Pedro is a safe, stylish neighborhood in San Jose so we enjoy taking our guests out for movie nights, skating, city walks and pub crawls on Calle de la Amargura. The University District is close enough to ensure there are always activities going on but with the hostel being a few blocks from the main highway you can also get a quiet night\'s rest.
From Juan Santamaria Airport we are 30 minutes by taxi. We can arrange a shuttle to pick you up at the airport for $30. Send the hostel an email at castletamhostel@gmail.com to arrange the shuttle. If you want to take a taxi from the airport give him the following directions:
1. 'En San Pedro...'
2. 'Cien metros al oeste de la Escuela Roosevelt.'
3. 'La casa blanca esquinera.'
If you want to save money and can speak a little Spanish you can take the city bus downtown. It costs less than $1 one-way but you should use Costa Rica money (Colones) to pay. The bus stop is on the other side of the parking garage after you exit the airport just after you clear customs.
FROM THE AIRPORT BUS STOP DOWNTOWN: At this point we recommend taking a taxi using the directions above but if you feel comfortable enough navigating the streets of San Jose on foot use the following directions. The bus stop is on Avenida 2. Head North one block to the pedestrian only walking street known as Avenida Central. Turn right (East) and walk all the way to the end of it until traffic starts again. You should see a line of buses right in front of you. Take any of them for around 210 Colones. After about a 7-10 minute bus ride be on the look out for a large round about. You need to get off at the next stop. It is in front of the San Pedro Outlet Mall, a three story crimson building. Exit the bus and turn right. Walk for 50 meters towards the Banco Nacional. Turn left (South) walking between the Outlet Mall and the Bank. Walk two blocks. There will be a football pitch (soccer field) on your left. When you reach the Escuela Roosevelt turn right (West). Castle Tam Hostel is at the end of the block, on the corner.
FROM THE COCA COLA BUS STATION (JACO, SANTA TERESA, MONTEZUMA, TAMARINDO) : Exit the station and walk South two blocks. South is opposite from where the buses are parked. When you reach the busy street turn left in the direction of traffic flow. You will see all of the cars turning to the right but you need to continue walking straight. When you reach the pedestrian only walking street you have arrived at the Avenida Central. Walk all the way to the end of it (approximately 15 blocks) until traffic starts again.
