Our hostel with campsite is located in the village of Breb, one of the most beautiful and traditional villages of Maramures.
Our hostel is made in a traditional barn with a common room and simple kitchen on the ground floor. On the first floor is the dormitory, with single beds. The dorm has great views over the village and surrounding mountains. From the balcony you can pick your own fresh apples right from the tree, or just sit back and relax!
We have also one tent for rent- this is listed as private rooms. In the tent, for one or two persons, you will find a double mattress, bed linen and towels. If you hire a tent, you're welcome to use the kitchen in the hostel. Please note breakfast is not included in the price for the tent.
Breakfast is included for dorms but not included for the tents (private rooms).
You can also use our garden of approximately 7000 square metres, of which parts are used as a small-scale campsite. In the garden you will find chairs, hammocks and places where you can make a fire. Just find yourself a place in the grass or under a tree and enjoy the views all the way to Ukraine.
From our garden, you can walk into the fields, to other villages, to the forest and even up to Mount Gutai. The village itself is a real attraction: unpaved paths, tiny streets rolling up and down the hills, streams with wooden bridges to cross them, green fruit orchards full of apples and plums, horses and carts taking hay through the fields. There is also an old wooden church, lots of wooden houses with wooden gates, and great people who will invite you into their house for a homemade tuica.
If you have any questions about the region and Romania or you just want to have a chat, the owners, Matthijs and Eveline, both experienced travellers, will be there for you.
The nearest train stations are Sighetu Marmației (Sighet) and Baia Mare. From both cities there are (mini)buses going to Breb (30 minutes from Sighet and 70 minutes from Baia Mare). The minibus will probably not go down in the valley, so like the locals, you will have to walk down to the village itself. But you can also give us a call and we will pick you up with our car (when the car is in the village).
From Cluj there are several buses and trains going to Sighet. Another option is to take a bus to Baia Mare and continue to Breb by minibus (see below).
From Baia Mare there are buses going to Breb at 07.00, 11.30 (not on sunday), 14.00 & 15.00 (these 2 only mon-fri) and 17.00. They will leave you on the road on top of the village. From there you can walk down with the locals, or call us and we will pick you up with our car. The other buses from Baia Mare to Sighet will follow another road and don't pass Breb. If you take one of these, get off in Hărniceşti or at the end of Giuleşti and hitch a ride to Breb. For a small charge (35 Ron) we can pick you up in Hărniceşti.
We can also come to the train station of Sighet (75 Ron) and Baia Mare (150 Ron) to pick you up if you will let us know a bit in advance (if we are available). We can pick up a maximum of 3 persons. If you want transport from another place, please let us know and we'll see what the possibilities are.
There is also a new direct train connecting Budapest with Sighet. It leaves Budapest at 9.40 in the morning and arrives in Sighet at 23.12 in the evening.
