If Bangkok is the head of Thailand, then the countryside is where its heart resides. Travel into the heartland of Thailand and stay in Thai houses and villages; discovering ancient temples and holy Buddhist sites and soaking up the serenity and friendly charm for which this region is famed.
Head to the historical parks of Ayutthaya, then drive to the largest Khmer temple complex in Thailand. See the silk-weaving process at Baan Tasawang and see how the elephants live at an elephant camp. Stay in a traditional Northern Thai style house set in beautiful gardens; soaking up the welcoming charm of the area.
We’ll visit a temple with a mixture of Thai, Laos and Burmese architecture at Ubon Ratchatani, next stop is the National Museum to really get under the skin of the Khmer period 1200 years ago. See pre-historic paintings at Pha Taem Historical Park and let the staff explain their origins. Try your hand at cotton weaving at an old Laos-Isaan village and take lunch at a restaurant overlooking the Thai-Laos Friendship Bridge.
Visit the house where Ho Chi Minh lived when he was leader of the resistance against French occupation, before going to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Ban Chiang. Home stay at a friendly country village where locals will welcome you with a traditional ‘Baci’ ceremony. Rise early and give morning alms to monks in a traditional Buddhist ritual. Sample the produce of the Chateau de Loei on the way to a high altitude research station.
