Throughout each program, the Language Components and Cultural Components are alternated - each representing approximately half of the total Program hours.
The first mission of the Immersion Program is to develop the student's ability to communicate in the world's sixth most-widely spoken language, by attempting to keep the student "in Bahasa Indonesia" for the duration of her/his stay.
The twin goal is to provide each student with a better understanding of the culture and people of Indonesia . . . and, hopefully, have students return home having acquired memories, friendships and influences which will impact their lives forever.
PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS :
All LSI Immersion Programs include an unusual TWO-DAY EXCURSION TO THE VILLAGES OF WEST JAVA (the area surrounding Jakarta). This extraordinary journey to wholly untouristed locales, provides students with unparalleled opportunities for authentic interaction with local farmers and operators of cottage industries, and traditional workers of every other sort.
Three- and four-week Immersion Programs also include a TWO-DAY BEACH VACATION on a tiny tropical island in the Java Sea (off the north coast of the island of Java). White sand, crystal blue water, snorkeling, diving, canoeing and jet skiing are all on offer, providing a welcome antidote to students' intensive regimen of study.
For those seeking only "intensive language instruction" (with no cultural component), LSI offers LANGUAGE ONLY PACKAGES which include Accommodation, Meals and Intensive Language Study (with no activities or excursions).
FOUR OF THE STUDENT'S WEEKDAYS are spent taking language lessons in the morning and participating in cultural activities in the afternoon (activities such as Indonesian Cooking Classes and Traditional Batik-Making Classes).
ONE WEEKDAY is devoted exclusively to exploring Jakarta, Indonesia's Capital City. Outings in the City include trips to cultural sites and museums, walking tours in historic districts, shopping at traditional markets, and eating at landmark restaurants.
ON WEEKDAY EVENINGS, the student has the opportunity to socialise with her/his Indonesian host family and participate in the spontaneous activities of the family - whether that be going out to sing Indonesian songs at a local karaoke establishment, going to see an Indonesian movie, or just spending an evening at home conversing in Bahasa Indonesia.
EACH WEEKEND, the student leaves the City for two days, journeying to rural areas surrounding the Capital, and visiting
destinations long ignored by the mainstream tourist industry.
The dual mission of these Weekend Excursions is to (1) heighten the student's awareness of the "traditional lifestyles" which remain a reality to for some 200 million Indonesians, and (2) help the student to develop a fuller appreciation of the benefits and drawbacks of progress - those things we have "gained" . . . and those things which are "lost forever."
The Language Component has been designed for "dedicated" adult learners seeking 'extremely rapid language acquisition.' Given the Program's fast pace, students are required to be 18+ years of age (although exceptions are occasionally made for mature 16- and 17-year-olds).
There is no "maximum age" for program admittance. The program is appropriate for adult learners of all ages, and excursion activities can be adjusted according to students' individual preferences and physical abilities.
Students should have a basic understanding of English (the language of instruction).
There is no prerequisite for 'absolute beginners,' but 'non-beginners' are are required to submit a Placement Test with their Enrollment.

LSI’s step-by-step course program is arguably the most effective and scientifically-based Indonesian language program available in the world today. In 2014, LANGUAGE STUDIES INDONESIA was recognised as BEST EDUCATION PROGRAM by Indonesia's Minister of Education and Culture.
LSI’s six patented certificate courses in Bahasa Indonesia are delivered by a world-class faculty, comprised wholly of university-accredited language instructors. Among the ranks are former university professors, writers, editors, linguists, interpreters, translators, curricula specialists, and many former school teachers from Indonesia’s international school community.
