Glacier Wind Charters is a locally owned and operated tour business that has been providing visitors with exceptional and memorable Alaskan experiences since 1995. Our tours originate from the harbor in Hoonah, Alaska located one mile from the Icy Strait Point cruise port.
Glacier Wind Charters puts you in the middle of the action aboard Kohola (Hawaiian for whale) our custom designed and built 32 foot power catamaran. Kohola is specially designed to maximize your whale watching
experience with a single level deck that allow for 360 degree viewing of the wildlife no matter where it chooses to appear. The catamaran hull offers the smoothest ride and most stable platform from which to enjoy the wildlife while drifting. Kohola is equipped with a full complement of modern conveniences and safety gear to insure you have the most comfortable and enjoyable day on the water possible. Our boat can transport up to six persons, assuring you a personalized, un-crowded experience.
Our captain, Shawn McConnell, is one of the most experienced and knowledgeable captains working in the area. Captain Shawn has 36 years of experience on the waters of Icy Strait, and has been sharing his knowledge of the local natural history on successful trips with our guests since 1995.
You will spend your time with us enjoying the whales and other abundant wildlife that are immediately accessible in Icy Strait and Port Frederick. We make every effort to see that your visit to Alaska is one that will provide a lifetime of unforgettable memories.
Tour length is 3.5 hours from pick up to arrival back at the pier. We travel along the shoreline looking for brown bears as we seek out humpback whales. When we find humpback whales we stop and enjoy watching them as they feed and play. You can expect to see Stellar sea lions, harbor and dall porpoise, bald eagles and a host of other sea birds as we make our way out and back to the prime whale watch
