Jasper is Canada's largest mountain national park with over ten thousand square kilometers of natural preserve and wildlife refuge. It is also a World Heritage Site and is the source of the World Heritage Athabasca river. The community of Jasper is located in the centre of the park and is accessed by the Yellowhead Highway (16) from the east and west and the Icefield Parkway (93) from the south. The elevation of the village is about 1000 meters and the surrounding mountains range from 2300 to 3400 meters with a multitude of rivers and lakes throughout the valleys. The area is a four season outdoor activity meca with literally hundreds of activities to participate in. Some of the more popular are golfing, fishing, horse-back riding, running, hiking, trekking, climbing, canoeing, kayaking, rafting, sailing, swimming, diving, biking, mountain biking, tennis, camping, bird-watching, skating, skiing, sno-shoeing, curling, hockey, sledding, ice-climbing, and many many other sports and activities.
The Astoria is a small hotel
with thirty five guest rooms all located on the second floor. On the main floor is a licensed dining room and coffee shop and a pub. The building was originally constructed in 1924 by the present owners ancestor and has been renovated numerous times. It has an alpine character and the interior decor is modern with many elements that recall the rich history of the property.
The guest rooms are small but attractively decorated and efficient. They have the finest quality beds and mattresses. The bed linens and pillows are also top quality featuring oversheets and comforters. Each room has a bathroom with fully tiled shower and toilet and seperate basin. Some of the rooms have bathtubs. Amenities include color cable TV with DVD players, wardrobe/desk units, coffee/tea service, phones, clock/radios, hairdryers, WiFi, and fans. The superior rooms all have a mountain view and the standard rooms have partial mountain view or interior landscaped court.
Papa George's restaurant has been serving good food to visitors and residents for over seventy-five years. The cuisine is contemporary with traditional western breakfasts, hearty soup and sandwich lunches, and creative dinner fare such as buffalo steaks, venison sausages, and wild duck. Almost everything on the menu including sauces, soups, and bread is prepared from scratch in the large kitchen. In the summer season Papa George's serves a british style cream tea in the afternoon. The restaurant is famous for great burgers and many of the popular menu items are available in the more casual atmosphere of the De'd Dog Pub.The pub has a typical English flavour with a large variety of domestic and imported lagers and ales on tap as well as a discriminating selection of scotches, bourbons, rye whiskey, rhum, gin, vodka, liqueurs, coolers and wines. It is a popular local meeting place, not too young or rowdy, with occasional live music. Sports are featured on large screens, pool & darts are available. The Hotel
is adjacent to a sports shop and has five specialty restaurants on the block including a pizza place, Japanese, Greek, and Korean cuisine. Their is a convenience store around the corner, a bakery, souvenier shops, a gift and camera store, and a bank at the end of the block. There is a Sports Centre with swimming pool & water slide, raquet courts, sauna, weight facility, curling rink, hockey arena, and auditorium two blocks from the hotel.
