Hello,
My name is Janet and I live in Canmore, Canada. I am planning a trek and safari with Stand Out Adventures and I asked for a reference and she gave me your contact details. Can you please advise what type of trip you did with Mary's company, the length, service, logistics, drivers, porters etc. We are just about to send our deposit but wanted to get a reference first.
Thanks very much.
Regards,
Janet
Hello Janet,
my name is Martin, living in Cologne, Germany.
I was on 2 major trips with standout adventures so far. The first one was in July 2009, together with my 2 sons, 21 and 18 years old. We started out with climbing Mt Kenya. Sirimon up, chogoria down. We slept in tents, because the huts there are not really comfortable and sometimes sort of crowded. All the luggage was carried by porters, so we had to carry only small backpacks for our daily items, like a bottle with water, rain gear, camera and so forth. The group was guided by Mary Kariuki and her brother John as a second guide. She told me, that she always takes a second certified guide on the mountain treks, just in case, that somebody should need special care. I thought, this was a very responsible and professional way to take care of the clients. My older son had some problems with the high altitude, once we reached shipton's camp. He was taken care of very well and with a delay of half a day we reached the summit without any further problems. The cook of the expedition managed to serve tasteful meals, even high up on the mountain. I had the impression, that all members of the expedition were in high respect of Mrs Kariuki as the leader of the team. Everything went smooth, no items disappeared--- altogether a great experience.
After that, we went on a wildlife safari to different national parks. We started out at Samburu NP, we stayed in tents there (my sons and me like it the adventurous way). Vehicle, driver, cook, tents: All was to my full satisfaction. Not to speak about the great animal encounters we had. Especially the grevy's zebras, which are only to be found north of the equator.
From there, we drove via Aberdares NP (2 nights at fishing lodge) to Lake Nakuru NP for the flamingos.
Altogether, this 2 1/2 week vacation met all our expectations and even beyond that. We felt very welcome to Kenya and the whole tour was organized and guided in a way, that made me come back.
My sister Linda emigrated from Germany to US in the late fifties. Now she is 71 years old and we did not spend to much of a time together so far in life. Since she is a lot into painting and photographing, I thought, it would be a great idea to invite her for an african adventure over new years eve 2009/2010. There is so much to paint and to photograph down there....
Because of the very good experience, that I had made with standout adventures, I chose them again. This time 12 days safari, including Aberdares, Solio Ranch Game Reserve, Castle Forest Lodge, Chui Lodge and Masai Mara .
Again, all expectations were met and we felt very well taken care of. Since their car is equipped with VHF radio, the driver had all the information, where e.g. the cheetahs or the lions were to be found. We saw 4 out of the big 5 on our very first day.
The prices, we had to pay were the ones, we were given in the itinerary. So, no bad surprises on that side.
Well, out of my experience, I can very strongly recommend this company. From the pick up at the airport until your departure, you will feel, that you are surrounded by professionals, whom you can trust.
I wish you a great vacation in Kenya, all the best
Martin
